What is going on here - I have posted 3 times in the last two days and had one response??? Is this a closed circle? Can't you fella's venture a response to my question? I didn't think it was boring (padded it with some interesting bits about SR getting things right in their mag, which at the end of the day is best for us and in turn them and needs to be illustrated) and thought maybe there were some of you that could help with my cable connection issue!!

AAAArgh. This is a community - at least let me know that you can't answer the question/it's silly/knob off. etc. and then I won't have to keep checking back in vain. I have posted long articles in the past (only a few - but I think less is more, instead of multiple inane and boring posts) so I am not a leech.

And also - don't ban me - this is a legit complaint, some of the posts (ho-hum the Rare story AGAIN) get more replies. I think the most interesting one on here yesterday was the drench the cube one, which it turns out got the author a solution in the end - well done.

:o( Come on guys....

Because Nintendo still hate and don't seem to consider Europe as a major market..at least that's the way i see it anyway. Fact is that Europe is a biggers market than Japan so Nintendo really need to get their fingers out.

One thing i've noticed is publishers such as EA and a few other don't seem to take anywhere the same amount as time as Nintendo getting the games over here, we tend to get the same time or in a couple of weeks of the US dates so it's not all bad.

It certainly isn't particuarly good though...

No problemo D! Always happy to help...

What makes a game great? Hmmm...good question. Certain games in my lifetime have evoked powerful feelings in me akin to a shiver up my spine that can only be measured on a richter scale! The first time I used the sniper rifle in Goldeneye, I almost died of excitement, when the beautiful haunting music of Zelda plays when you first switch it on, Koopa smashing Bowser on the last lap of Rainbow Road with a red shell...
As to what makes a game great? Well, it's a subjective view isn't it? mean, one man's meat might be another man's poison but some developers make consistently great games that are universal appealing. How do they do it? Master Miyamoto keeps churning out great games but what drives him on? He's quite old and he's been in the business for years. What are his goals and how do his goals and ambitions fit in with what we think? How many times can you update a game albeit introducing new styles and variations before it becomes stale or before the idea becomes obsolete. Will we ever get bored of Mario? How long before gaming ideas are all used up. I've always thought that the games made these days are only limited by the power of our imagination. With technology getting better and better are we seeing more original games harnessing the extra power of our consoles or are we finding that the formula is getting stale? Why are there so many driving games/platform games/FPS games etc. that are mostly identical except in name? Do names sell games? Probably. So does innovation make a great game? Not likely but it helps. In all honesty, I don't know what makes a game great.

That wasn't very helpful but I'm going to have a long, hard think about it tonight and come back tomorrow with some type of criteria for a great game...

Cheers unbeliever - looks like even the newbies have got a fearsome arsenal of interesting things to talk about with:
-Good spelling (I do try - but typing fast and accurately is not that easy)
-Decent topics
-Fair and constructive debating
-Like mindedness

and Community spirit - wahey!So:

-What makes a game great (not on a specific platform or a specific genre - rather a specific game -this is what good old Shigeru Miyamoto and Yuji Naka have in their bones and when we find it in their games - how do we translate this into words that get the point across. "Fun" is good it's just been overused :P Still haven't found anyone who can do it...)

-Can anyone tell me if the S-video cable for NGC available from SR does what it says on the box. Really. And, likewise for the VGA converter box. I cannot use RGB simply becuase the Video card in my PC doesn't have a socket for it. If not I accept maybe nobody has any experience with this.

-And lastly, and probably debated to hell and gone, but why do we get games so frikkin late??? I hate reading IGN - I get so excited and then read the release list and go to the corner to sulk.

Don't worry, pal. I'm a newbie even though I've been here on and off for a while. Probably because i haven't really posted enough words yet...
I did read about your cable problem and vividly recall reading about this in a computer mag a while ago. The reason I didn't reply is because I don't think I could have added anything constructive to your problem. I can mention that I bought a Wavebird on e-bay about 3 months ago and they're superb!

Ermm..but back to your general query, I haven't seen any evidence of people being flamed or ignored without good reason. Of course, you'll always get some idiots who think that this is a perfect place to make infantile and irrelevant comments and they deserve to be cut down for it. However, I can see that a decent bunch of people with genuine, thought provoking and useful information and debating skill reside in these chatrooms and that's why I'm here: to debate, deconstruct and provide critical analysis and praise where and when needed as well as trying to impart any useful knowlledge I have gleaned to other less informed people.

Sounds a bit stuffy and formal but that's the essence of these discussions isn't it?

hey - look - result!

I appreciate the points made chaps - Snipe, Newbie = no rights/no avenue for complaint is not really constructive. As regulars you post interesting things and thus encourage contributions from all members, newbie to super duper god thingy members. However, ignoring a unique post from a newbie gives the impression (which i was under) that it's a fraternity of members who don't give a t@ss unless the name is purple or green. I have been here for ages but I was discouraged when I have had a total of 8ish replies to anything I have written, and believe me, the topics have been far more meaty than say - "I hate X" or one liners which are typical of newbie posts maybe?

I have contributed on the relevance of arcade games to the industry today and their demise to date and what made those games great (the essence of it - not whether you liked playing a fioghting/shooting/racing game but why they appealed to anyone with a gamers bone in their body, why we couldn't help but put hard earned dosh into these machines in vast quantities) in the same way as say, Street fighter/virtua racing was great, a few bits on X vs Y and yes, this damn cable issue!

Soooooo in a round about way I suppose I am encouraging newbies to write more contructive relvant material and for senior members to not get into the groove of sparring with each other but give a newbie a chance to show he can teach/learn a thing or two.
