When the PS2 was released in the October of 2000 there was a lot of controversy over the price of it and the games that we received for our money, Tekken Tag Tournament was slated over its level of entertainment compared to the hype that it got and the only major successful launch title was SSX Snowboard Supercross which captured our imaginations and gave EA another life line.

Ever since the release the games have taken giant leaps in the form of us wanting to get a quality title for our hard earned money.

Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec was possibly the first PS2 title that was worth every penny and every PS2 owner who was a racing fan or who enjoyed one of the worlds greatest games went out and purchased this game from their local store. Ever since GT3 was released peoples estimations of gaming on the PS2 has sky-rocketed and we will now only except an A-Class game and nothing less.

Games carry a very expensive price tag, so when we buy a game we want to make sure that the title we are buying is worth every penny. We now review and look at games into great deatil before going out and buying them, we ask for other peoples oppinions and find out what they think is strong and weak about the game and if it will suit our needs.

The realese callender for the PS2 is looking extremly strong and some of the games that we have received over the last 6 months have been of the highest order an this years releases are looking very promising. This year we can look forward to the highly anticipated and superb DEUS-EX which is making its console debut after getting 32 Game of the year awards in 2000 and it is set to rock our PS2'. Tekken 4,Virtua Fighter 4, Tomb Raider Next-Gen, Stuntman, Final Fantasy X and XI will strike down onto our consoles in the near future, bot to mention MGS2 which is set for release at the end of this week.

Gaming is getting better and better and the consumers now have reason to get excited about a game instead of having mixed feelings on whether the game can strike the right balance of both excellent gameplay and ground-breaking graphics.

Games on the PS2 are now photo-genic with their graphics and game companies are now employing Hoolywood directors to apply their knowledge to games, Max Payne is one of the first titles that is going to be turned from a game into a film instead of the other way around and the makers of MGS2 have employed the fantasticly tallented 'Harry Gregson' to supply the music for MGS2. Gregson is famous for 'Armeggedon' and other top Hollywood films.

Cut-scenes in games are becoming longer and more detailed and they give us a back-ground incite into the characters we are playing with and fighting against. The cut-scenes are having mixed recpeptions due to their extensive length but deep down they apply a film to the game we are playing.

At this rate gaming is going to sky-rocket even further and in a few years time we will be watching The 'Oscars' for gaming excellence and instead of having world renoun actors/actresses like 'Russel Crow' and 'Julia Roberts' we will be prasing 'Solid Snake' and 'Dante' for their services in gaming, I know it sounds a bit far fetched but it will happen at the rate the gaming industry is growing at.

Value for money is no-longer a question when we buy games like 'Grand Theft Auto 3' becuase we know that we will receive a blockbuster title that we will play for months on end.

What do you think about the gaming industry on the ps2? Do you agree that games have good reason to be excited about? Or do you think that we should receive more than what we are getting? Please tell me what your feelings are about the PS2 and do you think that the year ahead is one to get excited about, because I certaintly do!

Yes and no Triple H. As we have heard many times before, the PS2's architecture makes it harder to develop for than both the X Box and the GC. The biggest thing that the PS2 has in it's favour is it's installed user base.

It is going to take Microsoft and Nintendo a long time to sell as many consoles as Sony already have and obviously Sony's sales are going to continue to rise.

When publishers are looking to bring out a new game will there first consideration be ease of production or potential revenue ? If they looked at ease of production then they will look to the X box, if they look at potential revenue then they will look at PS2. This is obviously therefore in our favour as PS2 owners as it will increase our choice of games to purchase.

If the new game then receives good enough reviews and consequently good enough sales, then the possibility of conversion to X box or GC would be considered as the main development costs will have been covered. This would be good for us as gamers as it increases are chances to play the best games whichever console/consoles we own.

As for originality it comes down to that one factor again, which is money. At what point do the publishers decide to gamble on something totaly new like Herdy Gerdy or stick with a well known, money making franchise like Fifa or Tomb Raider ? The potential is there with the user base Sony have to attain massive sales if the idea and the game are good enough. Time will tell how well Herdy Gerdy does and if it does well enough it could well persuade Eidos to gamble again on something original in the future.

With games taking as long as two years plus to develop from idea through to finished product the financial gamble for publishers is considerable and there has to be complete faith in the designers and programmers that they are capable of producing something in the future that gamers are going to want to buy. How can they know this at the initial design stage with trends changing as quickly as they do.

How many times do we read previews in games mags that really praise up a new game in development, only to read the review two months later which gives a score of 5/10 or 50%. When this happens with a totally original game the sales will suffer dramtically and it will put the publishers of from gambling in the future, when it happens with a game which is the latest in a series such as Fifa it will not effect the sales in the same way as people will still be buying what they consider to be a know and trusted brand.

At the end of the day, all sales of games come down to the skill of the programmers at the development teams and they deserve to be acknowledged for the enjoyment that they bring to us.

Sorry about the length of the reply MG2K but just to put - good post I agree - doesn't do it justice.

To be honest the better the other consoles are, the better the PS2 experience is going to be. If there is enough competition for the PS, developers will go out of their skin to bring us top notch games to challenge the top titles of other consoles. Admit it, if there would be no competition the developers would do sod all and just do ARmy Games over and over again....

whatever console you own you will defend so people will always argue the toss over what console they own, my mate evn defended his dreamcast saying that it was better then a ps2 so lets hope the ps2 will win but at the end of the day it dosen't matter as long as we are happy with the consoles that we own ourselves!

I think there is being too much made of which console is going to be better, i cant see what it matters, is it not more benifitial to all us gamers if all the consoles are mind blowingly good?

And on the other hand anyway, i dont really care what the others do, i know the PS2 caters for me and as long as it keeps doing that, regardless of the sales, to me it will be the better console.

The developers now have more original ideas that they can use on the PS2, because they are more confident of using the machine and the dev kits. As you know, when the PS2 first was released many were extremely cautious with the kits and found it very hard to use.

Now that they are able to use the PS2's power to their advantage, they can explore more and hopefully soon we will be playing some truly great games. We already had GTA3 and Pro Evo Soccer but the console is only about a year and a bit old. The PSone started blossoming about 3 years after oit was first released so the future looks promising.

I got my PS2 in June last year (it was my birthday present). I didnt want to get it ear;ier for a couple of reasons. First of all, I needed to revise for exams and didnt want to be distracted and secondly, the lack of games worried me. I curtently got 10 games for my PS2 but before the day GTA3 was released I only had 2 yes two games. I amnow looking to purchase some of the older titles such as Timesplitters and Red Faction but I am also thinking of the games that will be out later this year.

I am delighted with my PS2 and I am not going to complain at the lack of good games, quite franky because well there is no lack really. With games like MGS2 and Virtua Fighter released in the coming weeks, why the hell should we be scared of the X-Cube ?

MGS2 will have a huge effect on ps2 gaming and it will sell as the strongest ps2 game to date, the sales will sky-rocket and people will rush to purchase this game!
