There is a rumour going round that, Microsoft built the early Xbox's using bad parts - and that Microsoft knew it! Why would MS make a console with bad parts? In order to get the console onto the market as quickly as possible, and/or to save a bit of money (the parts in question were also supposed to be cheaper) during production. The problems cause the drive to have problems reading discs. Disc error's, etc. As a result of all of this, XBox console's have been failing well within the first 12 months. For customers in some countries, there is no 1 year standard guarantee. So if it breaks after 6 months - you have to pay for the repair (about $99 I think). But if MS knowingly used suspect parts, they could be held responsible.

No company the size of Microsoft would knowingly fit bad parts to a device as important to company prestige as the Xbox. All consoles have teething troubles at first. Some, particularly those made by a Japanese company who we'll refer to cryptically as Snoy, have more than others.

I don't think there is any 'could' about it. If this is acurate, and they did infact use parts that they knew weren't up to scratch, then I believe there is some sort of ruling whereby they *have to* replace/refund the customer, as part of the acceptance of a customers money for their product.

Still, I'm quite suprised a company like Microsoft would go with parts they new would affect them in a negative way down the line. Where did you hear/read this from, may I ask?
