There is a rumour going round that, Microsoft built the early Xbox's using bad parts - and that Microsoft knew it! Why would MS make a console with bad parts? In order to get the console onto the market as quickly as possible, and/or to save a bit of money (the parts in question were also supposed to be cheaper) during production. The problems cause the drive to have problems reading discs. Disc error's, etc. As a result of all of this, XBox console's have been failing well within the first 12 months. For customers in some countries, there is no 1 year standard guarantee. So if it breaks after 6 months - you have to pay for the repair (about $99 I think). But if MS knowingly used suspect parts, they could be held responsible.

I actually got 1 controller4 games and a DVD kit instead of what was advertised.

Because I'm special.

what about that other rumour? The fact that the X-BOx is REALLY a missle silo, and that green blotch in the middle is where the missles come from.
It al adds up, Bill Gates wants to take over the world, and knows that there is someone in nearly every street with a games console of some kind, so he planned to plant missle silo's across the world, blow everywhere up, and take over the world!!!!

"Between one and two months after being bought" is well within the warranty period. ???

I can't say anything about the DVDs, because I don't use it for DVD playback. But I have had the problem with TS2. I contacted both MS and Eidos about it towards the end of October; MS replied on 27th October saying that it *could* be a problem with the HDD, but I've not had any issues with other games, so I suspect it's a problem with the software rather than the hardware. We may never know, though, because Eidos STILL haven't replied!

So by the fact you say that DVD (movies) just stop, and TS2 reports the HDD has been disconnected, the XBox does have some problems. I can use my Sony PS2 has a DVD player, and I don't have any problems.

I would find it easier to believe that about the PS2, rather than Xbox. The PS2 is prone to breaking down between one and two months after being bought, just out of warranty. I know about 10 users who've had to pay the whopping £80 repair fee for this, and I doubt anybody has had troubles with the Xbox.

It's true though that I sometimes get disc read errors, once or twice DVDs have just stopped and TimeSplitters 2 has a bug which says the HDD has been disconnected during play :D.

Do you have any idea of the scale of the problem involved in manufacturing state-of-the-art hardware for no money whatsoever?

Well, there will always be rumours going around but I think MS has a pretty good customer service system (remember the offer to re-imburse original X-BOX owners with a game + DVD remote/controller when they dropped the price?) and it wouldn't affect UK users.
I think it beggars belief that MS has spent all their money on designing the ultimate games machine with gamers in mind (long control pad leads etc) and then they can't even get get efficient and workable X-BOX's out to the public.
