I just saw two screen shots at www.tendobox.com

The first link said "Samus in Third Person" so I clicked it to find another one of those "visor vision" shots.
I reluctantly second "Samus in First Person" link for a pleasant surprise.

Samus was in third person.
And it didn't look like a cutscene either...

Then in my head, a reminder popped out about how I'd read an article where Retro Studios were looking for level designers.

Level Designers who would add in third person platforming into the current FPS frame???

But why would they suddenly change it?

Well just a few months back, Metroid Prime's head designer left the team.
That got me thinking:

Maybe the new designer ACTUALLY PLAYED THE ORIGINAL METROID GAMES, and intends to bring Prime into line with the rest of the series!

If that IS the case, Metroid Prime has potential to be one of the BIGGEST hits on the Gamecube, not least because it's tapping into an area of the market which hasn't properly been explored.

Think about it. All the platformers nowdays are cartoony which might put many people off.
Tomb Raider was an "adult" platformer and that's why so many people loved it despite it being slow and pretty much crap.

Now a new "adult" platformer comes in with fast paced action, sharp controls, lots of shooting, tension, special weapons and giant monsters!

If Metroid can take this genre (I.E. be a proper update of the Snes one), it has potential to be possibly even bigger than Zelda!

Why do screenshots of Mario Sunshine always get released when screenshots of Metroid Prime? And why does Mario Sunshine continue to look painfully average in the graphics department? Humf.

To platform, you need to be able to see your character in the third person so you can see where they are compared to the platform.

As for the auto-jump, I suppose it could make platforming in FPS games a bit more do-able, but it's very limiting and restrictive.

It would be much more fun and interesting to switch between first and third person so you can explore, shoot and jump as you see fit. Mess around jumping off walls Mario 64 style and testing your skills/moves.

The only reason that a Metroid games should have a first person is for aiming the guns.

And I'd rather have an auto-aiming third person games than a first person game with no platforming.

I still think that first-person jumping can work.

Use an 'auto-jump' feature (like N64 Zelda) when you reach the end of a platform and stuff.

I don't get why no game has implemented something like this?

Apparently, Samus would only switch into Third Person while rolling and would play the rest of the game through first person.

Seeing as Metroid is as much about jumping as it is with shooting, a game where you have to play stick to first person unless rolling just wouldn't be Metroid.

But if they've done it properly and combined platforming and shooting (where you switch between first and third person at will - like on Jet Force Gemini), it'll be the true Metroid revival I've been hoping for.

Metroid is the most messed up game Nintendo have probably ever had to deal with.

Eight months into development Miyamoto-san gets the code for the game a few days before it is due to be shown at Spaceworld. The graphics were still very jerky, there was aweful popup, and no sound.

So bad was the game that Miyamoto-san only allowed 8 seconds of it to be shown as Spaceworld. EIGHT seconds for EIGHT months development.

In the after show conference Miyamoto-san was asked why so little of the game was shown. In a completely unpresidented move by a Nintendo representative he had to admit the game was in an apauling state, and it's whole future was in jeopardy.

(Odd how Nintendo mags all said how great the game was looking at Spaceworld eh?)

Anyway, the game has since been saved to an extent. Miyamoto-san has put a new producer and head designer in charge of the game, and they are essentially remaking it.

So the game will, as expected not be released until it is up to Nintendo's near perfect standards. It will be perfect.

But we'll have to wait a long, long time at this rate.
