I remember a long time ago, about 4 months after the Microsoft announced they would be releasing the X-Box.... i am sure i heard them talk about the main things that people would benefit from would be to upgrade the X-Box to save buying loads of new consoles every few years.

Does anyone actually know if htis is true? Will we one day be able to view the 250 million polygons a second promised? I hope you can help cos i really hope it is upgradable!

Is there any point in upgrading a console when developers only make games optimised for what the console's power is at launch - it's just an un-neccassary risk for no profit.

The XBox is a dedicated games machines that also plays DVD's in the same way as the PS2. But the underlying console of the XBox is very close to a PC, a high spec PC at that. I study computer science and have looked at the consoles in a fair bit of detail and it is possible to upgrade the xbox slightly as I mentioned before but not common practice, the same could be done with other consoles but the risks and complexity of doing so is very high and unless you know what you are doing stay clear at all costs or prepare to kill your x-box.

Just to prove I am not telling porkies I found some URL's to back it up.

The reason a console is a console is because they are only meant to do one thing (or in X-Box's case many things easily and well). If it was upgradable then it would be a computer.

The X-Box can be upgraded if you want, not a wise thing to do but if you want to upgraqde/modify it then you can. When I say modify or upgrade I don't mean make it a lot better but you can make small adjustments such as overclocking the processor and graphics cards and also improve the cooling system (Guys in the USA have a water cooled XBox)
The specs of the xbox are similar to a PC which isn't a bad thing, as of yet I don't think you can upgrade the processor, graphics card, memory etc but I know that Microsoft are releasing a newer version of the xbox over here which is slightly different from the ones released over in the US (Improved a little I think)
