when i buy xbox magazines i like to read the reviews that different games have been given.
often when i look at the number of marks out 10 given i compare to the special reserve customers marks out of ten.
Alot of the time the games score completely differently.
so which ones am i supposed to believe?

I havn't been dissipointed with Splinter Cell, Its linear, but each section is like a large puzzle- having to work out how to use your stealthy skills to get through unnoticed.

What are you talking about Maverick? Clearly UBISOFT and Splinter Cell haven't managed to beat MGS2? Since you haven't even played Splinter Cell I don't think you can really comment, but coming from someone who had MGS2 on pre-order for over 1 and a half years and completed it 4 times collecting all Dog Tags I can hold my hand up and say that Splinter Cell is better. MGS3 needs to take what Splinter Cell has done and improve on it because otherwise people will be disappointed.
Edge is so caught up in trying to be "cool" that they couldn't recognise decent stuff when it hits them in the face, mostly... Mech Assault review was totally wrong - Live games are not just games of atrition unless you're crap at the game, strong teamwork and decent tactics do win games, and the same can be said for the 1 player review. Oh, NOM sucks big time too.

To the orignal question of who to believe, well really you make up your own judgement. Different magazines, websites e.t.c. have different reviewers who like different games and genres. User reviews can be a little biased, as you dont really want to score a game you bought really low, so people may add 1 or 2 marks to give it an 8 or a 9.
Best thing is to go to the major websites like Gamespot and IGN and see there scores. Read the reviews, see what positives and negatives they say. I remember Mario Sunshine got 8.0 from Gamespot due to the reviewer hating the camera system, personally I dont mind it and wouldnt rate the game down because of it. Just read a few reviews from different places and make up your own mind. Look at a few movies of the game or play a demo. I am researching into Eternal Darkness for the GC at the moment to see whether its a game I would like. If it is then i'll buy it after christmas.

Forget Edge, They are untrustwothy and contradicitve to themselves.
Get Games™ really really good multiformat magazine. I like it, They gave Splinter Cell an 8/10 which is reasonable. They give quite a few good articles on console wars, They love the Xbox, They love the Gamecube and Love the PS2. But they highlight each consoles downpoints and stuff.
It also has a great Retro section at the back which made me go all nostalgic seeing a few of the games that I have'nt seen in years.

Edge said that MechAssault had a 'horrible lack of control' with 'prolonged reload times'. They then go on to say it's 'overwhelmingly linear' and 'fails to convery any colossal sense of scale'.
Maybe a bit harsh, but Edge are usually honest.

I never listen to Edge, they seem to slate top games in order to make a little name for themselves. Plus I find they're mag pretty boring compared to the likes of each consoles main mags.
4/10 for Mech Assault ? Please - obviously they didn't bother pressing the start button at the title screen.

Come on, if that's what Edge think then that's what they think - I doubt they'll start being biased just because they don't like Microsoft (Halo - 10/10, anyone?). Would you hate Edge so much if they gave it 10/10?
Christ, they were being honest. It's tough to beat the quality found in games like MGS2, and evidently, Ubi Soft haven't done it.

EFGE aren't biased against the Xbox are they??? Nearly every other site and magazine has given Splinter Cell 9.5 and above, EDGE don't like Xbox and therefore they give the games low marks. They need to grow up and stop putting there petty little negativities in the way of amazing games. Splinter Cell is the game of the year and if you played it you would know!
