In answser to the original question, I've written about 5 or 6 reviews, all of which I considered to be excellent, but only two of which won. Examining the reviews that beat mine, I came to the conclusion that my writing style was too heavy. I read Edge a lot, and my reviewing style mirrors theirs.
The key to winning is to persevere. I get the impression that the people judging the reviews only skirt over them and pick one they like - the last time I entered, there were 5 or 6 reviews as good as mine, and one that I considered to be inferior to all of them won. Don't give up if you don't win at first, keep trying. Humour can't help either.
Also, read some of the winning reviews to get a feel for how other people write reviews, particularly by those who win a lot. Look for reviews by any of the notables - they are a good pointer to what it takes to win.
