Unlike most Hollywood film lovers i like to watch all sorts of different films, and i regard myself as a film buff. i believe i know alot about film, and i want to share my knowledge with you, the members of this board. now, there have been alot of discussion about what time was the best for films, and i think i speak for all of us here that it was the 90's, i mean, the 90's had everything, from the epic blockbusters of Gladiator and Titanic to the surreal thrillers like the sixth sense and fight club (a film starring brad pitt, but not hollywood). there were great action films too, but i prefer more intellectual films like fight club. and all the best directors like Ridley Scott (of Gladiator and Hannibal fame) and David Fincher (of Fight Club fame) started their carrers in the 90's. what other period in time since film began 50 years ago boast nuturing two such great and different talents that are Fincher and Scott. Now dont get me wrong, i also like old films like Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction, which are also very clever and have goo directors, but all they did was make that one flim and then i havent seen any more from them.
So, i think that the future of films is in good hands, with people like David Fincher, Ridley Scott and Kevin Smith making films we are in the best period of films since it began.
thank you 90's you ARE the best! (but maybe the next ten years may have some more to offer) If you have any questions regarding these films i mentioned that you may not have heard of, i.e fight club or Goodfellas, i can give you some more information on them, they are tough to watch, but if you know your movies - like me!! haha-modest ;) then you should be able to understand them.
Also, have a look out for some new films which i am trying to find, like Memento, which is meant to be a flim shot in reverse (sounds wierd i know, but try it!) and Sexy Beast which i kind of a gangster film, but not as good as Goodfellas.
sorry for the long post, but when i get talking about movies i just cant stop, thanks for reading!!

all the films that you named were american or american financed, so you disproved your own point. plus, there are barely any japanese films made, especially in the 60's and 70's, and what is so great about them? can any of them be remembered now? no. the simple reason, because films like Gladiator and Fight Club are way better intellectually and that is what a true film buff like myself prefer.

I am afraid I must disagree with you on this subject. I also see myself as a bit of a movie buff, and sure, the 90's had it's triumphs such as Reservoir Dogs, The Fugitive, Silence of the Lambs and Twelve Monkeys to name just my personal favourites. However, I just don't think it can cut it over the 60's and 70's. The 90's definitely had the edge with technology, with much more money and with bigger and better special effects. However, this has also proved to be a major downfall in the quality of the films. In many cases, films are churned out with flimsy scripts and poor casts, but with enough special effects to sink a battleship. I don't think we shall ever see films such as Jaws or the magnificent Alien ever again, because their genius came from the fact that they could not do special effects convincingly enough to have hundreds of close ups and flashy CGI. You hardly saw the shark in Jaws, adding greatly to the tension and suspense. Nowadays we have films like Deep Blue Sea trying to be like the mighty Jaws, but failing because of its poor script and its inability to not show off with its special effects.
Another problem with films in the 90's, and a problem which is increasing by the year still, is the virtual monopoly that the american hollywood studios have over the market. They produce their own films by the bucketload, and you can scaresly look at the credits of a non-american film without finding that some hollywood company has financed the whole thing. Back in the 60's and 70's, films from all over the world were produced without any involvement from the giant studios that dominate the market now. Whatever happened to those brilliant Japanese films they used to make?
My third and final reason for favouring the 60's/70's to the 90's is the sheer amount of quality classic films from that era, including The Great Escape, Get Carter, The Clinet Eastwood Spaghetti Western Trilogy, Jaws, Monty Python + the Holy Grail, Monty Python's Life of Brian, Psycho, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Italian Job and many, many more, Not forgetting my personal all time favourite film, Zulu.
So there we have it. The 60's and 70's are better than the 90's. I challenge anyone to convince me otherwise.
