You’re sneaking through an enemy bunker, you’ve already taken out what seems like an army of guards, the end of the level must be approaching, you check the clip in your gun, DAMN you’re down to your last bullets. You better take this slowly, there’s no need to alert any unwanted attention, suddenly you freeze on the spot, you can hear footsteps coming your way. Your hands begin to shake, you’ve got this far you don’t want to get taken out now. Suddenly the footsteps stop, all of a sudden 2 guards appear into view guns blazing in your direction, you panic and let off a stream of bullets one of the guards takes a round in the hip and drops to the floor clutching at his leg, but his friend is still shooting at you. You take a round in the arm; your health is on its last legs. Your heart is beating heavily, you struggle with the controller trying to press the reload button it seems to take forever. Yes it’s reloaded you let off a spray of bullets, the guard manages too get off a few shots before his skin is torn by your fire, his lifeless body slumps too the floor. YES you’ve done it the end is in sight you make mad dash for the exit but as you’re running you turn round to see the first guard lifting his limp body up off the floor. OH CRAP you forgot about him there’s no bullets left in your gun so you’re going to have to make a run for it, the guard begins to fire the bullets scream over your head, surely not now only a few more seconds till the end of the level, then go suddenly the screen goes red, the b’sterd got you, you throw the controller at the screen and turn the console off.

I’m sure that type of thing has happened to us all many times, the amount of times that’s happened to me on Goldeneye is uncountable; anyway I’m not here to talk about how annoying some computer games can be. Take a scenario like that your hearts pumping; you’re excited and nervous at the same time, when I’m playing games like that I can never really work out if I’m actually enjoying myself or whether it’s just the challenge that makes me want too come back. I was playing Perfect Dark earlier, I’ve been stuck on the same level for ages now and it’s really starting to get on my nerves. I keep getting right near the end of the level then I get killed at the last moment. I’ve been thinking is playing these sort of games really what I would class as having actual fun, the only reason I go back is too get past the sodding level, when I’m playing I’m not really having FUN it’s just challenge of it and the achievement of winning. Then I thought is the type of enjoyment we experience when playing these games what you would call fun, okay when you first start them and you’re playing the easier levels you are enjoying yourself but when you get too these hard levels that you have to repeatedly play I wouldn’t call them more exciting than actually fun. Don’t get me wrong I love playing games like that, they’re challenging and exciting but I wouldn’t call them actually fun. And that’s where Nintendo comes in.

Now I know that when a lot of you hear the word Nintendo you think kiddy platformers, I’m too ‘mature’ for them. I would have too totally disagree. The major differences between say Mario and more serious games are that Mario games are just plain and simple fun, the developer isn’t aiming for realism he isn’t aiming to create atmosphere they’re just made to have a good time. The variety of things you find yourselves doing in these games is incredible and the game play is never hindered by the boundaries of so called reality. Miyamoto can do anything he wants with the games direction one minute you could be flying through the sky chasing a giant bird the next you could be sliding down a cliff face chasing a giant penguin. I know a lot of you people are gonna be thinking it sounds so kiddy, I’d rather be driving round a track in my ultra realistic sports car doing ultra realistic things, don’t get me wrong I love realistic games as much as the next man (well maybe not driving games). But every time I want to unwind after a hard or depressing day Nintendo games are such a brilliant way of getting away from it, you never know what’s round the next corner, the levels aren’t predictable the only boundaries the game has to follow are the creators imagination.

To me there’s a massive difference between the sort of enjoyment I get out of action games compared to platformers and adventure games in general. Action games as good as they are more of a challenge than anything else, obviously it’s a great feeling to unload your gun in someone’s face (that didn’t sound too sick did it?) but running round these claustrophobic levels always with the threat of getting killed is a completely different type of enjoyment than I get from Mario games. I know the big cuddly characters and non-violent settings put off a lot of gamers, but I beg you forget about the cartoon graphics for a moment , ignore the fat plumbers and dudes with Toadstools for heads and spend some time with the game itself. I know it sounds stupid but I would call Mario games kind of relaxing, you never find yourself on the edge of your seat, you can take the game at your own pace, it's a totally different playing experience compared to games such as MGS.

Anyway at the end of the day what I’m trying too say is don’t write off Nintendo games because they have fluffy characters in them there’s so much gameply in them just waiting to be discovered. I know that Nintendo games aren’t going to appeal to a lot of you because you’re too ‘mature’, I just wish that everyone could get the sort of enjoyment that I do out of Mr Miyamoto’s works of God.

I rarely say this, but this is actually well worth a GAD!

Miyamoto classes the people who play his games as "the family gamer"- so what's that then?

Well, anybody of any age or any gaming ability can pick up a Miyamoto game and play it fluently straight away- that is the Nintendo difference.

The "family gamer" ranges from the kid of age 6, the adult of 30, and increasingly more for Nintendo, the female gamer.

Great post Tiltawhirl, a GAD for you me thinks.

I totally agree with what you've said. Miyamoto is like a magician when making fun games. The Cell Zelda which is 'Cartooned' may be classed as kiddy and imature, but i'm sure it's as fun as the next game!

Great post Tiltawhirl, hope you win GAD.
