OK, a little rumour control required but I've heard via a spy at Comet that they have heard the PS2 price is expected to come down to £140 just before Xbox launch.

Now it does sound a little extreme (£170 was more likely) but I have to say that along with the Platinum range it will make buying an Xbox a very hard decision to make for some.

On top of that the Gamecube is out before much longer and Sony don't want to make a habit of constantly reducing the price - that would make it sound like a panic move.

So - PS2 for £140?
I'm still a little unsure but what a ballsy move if it's true....

Now that is a random one!

Surname is Coates, so I just went for MR.COATES - it's also a name I used to use when I first played Counterstrike online so I just kept it really.

Sounds a bit Teacher-ish but there we go.....

Blimey, the Comet people dont know nothing..

I was trying to hand in my CV there last year, when I heard a couple buying a PS2 and a few PSone games. And guess what the bloke said to them? "You cant play PSone games on the PS2. I obviously had to butt in and explain them whats wrong cause they had some trouble with their PS2 or something...."

No offense, but all these people in Comet claiming to have "inside knowledge" about release dates and news are just plain lying- usually elaborating on rumours they've heard

I know this has got nothing to do with it, but where did you get the name Mr. Coates?

I know quite a few people who are waiting for the next price drop before they will buy a PS2 and most will buy once it gets to 170 as has been rumored before, at 140 Sony would clean up, A next gen console with DVD playback, 4 platinum games and 2 other new AAA titles for the same price as a basic eXpensive-Box. For people waiting to see what to buy there will be no contest.

I don't think the PS2 will drop down to £140, and we won't see a price drop till after the GameCube launch at least.
But I think there'll definitley be a drop by x-mas, and I think £150 (the GameCube price) is the lowest they'd go at the moment.

They won't wanna fall into the PSX trap making it less than £100, and everyone I know has a PS2!! So why do they need to change it to make more people buy one???

I agree it is likely that there will be another price drop in the next few months but like you say down to £140 is a bit too extreme more like £20 or £30 off.
