The Nintendo 64 was great console but there was something that let it down, the lost genres. There were two lost genres for the N64, which weren’t created to the full power of the 64bit console. These were serious racers and beat ‘em ups.

Serious racers (?) you ask? What I mean is racing simulation games. Where you can race in competitions and tune up a series of cars. While there was a good racer in Mario Kart for the N64, it just didn’t offer gamers what simulation racers did. There were quite a few 3rd party simulation type racers, but they still didn’t offer what gamers wanted. That’s when Rare started to look into this, in an extreme way.

They were looking to create a perfect simulation racer for the N64, but the weirdest thing was how they came about this. They bought several PlayStations and copies of one of the most famous simulation racer today, Gran Turismo. Rare were trying to mould this game in their own unique way. Sadly for N64 owners everywhere, this was never.

Now we come onto the Beat ‘em ups. Okay near launch of the N64 we did see the brilliant Killer Instinct Gold arrive, it’s prequel one of the best titles to come across our SNES screens. But where did all the other Beat ‘em ups go? After Killer Instinct Gold the life of Beat ‘em ups on the N64 was gone forever (Except Super Smash Bros. Which wasn’t really a serious 1-on-1 Beat ‘em up like many people wanted to see). In the early stages there were rumours that another sequel to Killer Instinct was going to hit the N64, but in 3D. Sadly, that’s all it was, a rumour. Since then we have seen nothing from Killer Instinct on any console (Except the GBA release of Sabre Wulf, which isn’t a beat ‘em up).

The big question in my head now, and in many others I expect, is are Nintendo going to make the same mistake with the GameCube? In my opinion, no.

As I said Rare were trying to find the perfect simulation racer for the Nintendo 64, but it was never released, but think about this for a minute, why would they take all that time trying to make a simulation racer and never release it? It may be released for the GameCube (If we’re lucky). Hopefully, V-Rally 3 will also make an appearance on the GameCube because of its recent release confirmation on the GameBoy Advance. So hopefully, the GameCube will see much more simulation racers appearing.

Now we come to Beat ‘em ups, we, as GameCube owners, are almost guaranteed to see brilliant, 3D Beat ‘em ups on the GameCube. One word I need to mention. Namco. Yes, we may well be getting our hands on Tekken 4 are definitely getting the brilliance that is Soul Calibur 2. So things are looking up for the GameCube.

No matter what is right, i don't think we have to worry about these genres on the GameCube, i think Nintendo and other developers have noticed this.

Well if what you are saying is right, then the Beat-'em-up standard is quite poor, but if what you are saying is wrong, then the beat-'em-up standard is good.

I suppose, i don't really class Wrestling games as Beat 'em ups, i don't know why, it just seem they have their own genres.

Suppose you're right.

But the WWF (which is presumebly a beat-'em-up title) games were high selling and were liked by even many Playstation owners. Especially No Mercy.

Yes, there were some good Racers and beat 'em ups, but they weren't as good as they could have been made. The N64 lacked these genres.

I don't think the GC will go the same way as the N64.

And some things that you have said aren't entirely true.

There were, in my opinion, many good racers and many good beat em ups on the N64.

But GC will improve the mount of titles vastly anyway, which means we should have an evern bigger range of games to choose from.

Nice (shortish) post!

I don;t think what you said were lost genres so to speak, Nintendo did have serious racers, Roadsters, World Driving Championship, Ridge Racer and a few others...

Nintendo had loads of beat 'em ups, Fighters Destiny, Mortal Kombat, WWF series, Smash Brothers,

What you mean to say is that Playstation Serious racers and beat 'em ups were better, GT and Tekken were better than what the N64 had to show but the N64 did cover the genre...

Want a lost genre? RPG's there were two proper RPG's one was naff and one was good (paper Mario).

I always dreamt of owning a GT-beater for my N64 but it simply never came. Sure I enjoyed racing games such as Diddy Kong Racing, but I had a huge desire to buy my favourite road car and tweak it to the max; something which never happened. With Gamecube though, I'm not that bothered if we don't see too many serious racers (although it'll help the console succeed), because I already own GT3 on the PS2. What I'll be looking for from Gamecube is more of what the N64 did best - platformers, action/adventure and first-person shooters.
Beat-em-ups always seem to be such a massive hit with gamers of all types (just imagine the PS2 without Tekken Tag at launch) and so having the likes of Soul Calibur 2 and Bloody Roar is certainly pleasing, to say the least.

P.S. V Rally 3 has been confirmed for Gamecube.
P.P.S. Some interesting points raised there, Rick. Nice one! :)
