The Nintendo 64 was great console but there was something that let it down, the lost genres. There were two lost genres for the N64, which weren’t created to the full power of the 64bit console. These were serious racers and beat ‘em ups.

Serious racers (?) you ask? What I mean is racing simulation games. Where you can race in competitions and tune up a series of cars. While there was a good racer in Mario Kart for the N64, it just didn’t offer gamers what simulation racers did. There were quite a few 3rd party simulation type racers, but they still didn’t offer what gamers wanted. That’s when Rare started to look into this, in an extreme way.

They were looking to create a perfect simulation racer for the N64, but the weirdest thing was how they came about this. They bought several PlayStations and copies of one of the most famous simulation racer today, Gran Turismo. Rare were trying to mould this game in their own unique way. Sadly for N64 owners everywhere, this was never.

Now we come onto the Beat ‘em ups. Okay near launch of the N64 we did see the brilliant Killer Instinct Gold arrive, it’s prequel one of the best titles to come across our SNES screens. But where did all the other Beat ‘em ups go? After Killer Instinct Gold the life of Beat ‘em ups on the N64 was gone forever (Except Super Smash Bros. Which wasn’t really a serious 1-on-1 Beat ‘em up like many people wanted to see). In the early stages there were rumours that another sequel to Killer Instinct was going to hit the N64, but in 3D. Sadly, that’s all it was, a rumour. Since then we have seen nothing from Killer Instinct on any console (Except the GBA release of Sabre Wulf, which isn’t a beat ‘em up).

The big question in my head now, and in many others I expect, is are Nintendo going to make the same mistake with the GameCube? In my opinion, no.

As I said Rare were trying to find the perfect simulation racer for the Nintendo 64, but it was never released, but think about this for a minute, why would they take all that time trying to make a simulation racer and never release it? It may be released for the GameCube (If we’re lucky). Hopefully, V-Rally 3 will also make an appearance on the GameCube because of its recent release confirmation on the GameBoy Advance. So hopefully, the GameCube will see much more simulation racers appearing.

Now we come to Beat ‘em ups, we, as GameCube owners, are almost guaranteed to see brilliant, 3D Beat ‘em ups on the GameCube. One word I need to mention. Namco. Yes, we may well be getting our hands on Tekken 4 are definitely getting the brilliance that is Soul Calibur 2. So things are looking up for the GameCube.

Thanks for Reading

Fighters Destiny was 'Supposed' to be good but never got to the same level as Tekken or Street Fighter. But now news of a 3D Mortal Kombat on the way the GameCube, lets hope it's better than the disappointing Mortal Kombat Advance.

But then again we don't really have to worry about fighters anymore, Soul Calibur, Bloody Roar and the 'rumoured' Killer Instict. I just hope that Rare racer does get to our CameCube screens, a racing simulator is always good news.

I think beat 'em-up's disappeared from the N64, because the first ones released were so naff. Duel Heroes, War Gods etc. Mortal Kombat 4 wasn't much good either, apparently Fighters Destiny was alright, but I never played it.

Street Fighter 2 was the only beat 'em-up I ever really liked though, so it didn't overly bother me that the N64 lacked this type of game. Still, news that the Gamecube will fare better in this genre is good to hear for many gamers, and Soul Calibur 2, though multiformat, will have an exclusive GBA link up feature, making the 'Cube version that little bit more special.

When it comes to realistic racers, I don't much care, I prefer to be a toy-racer to a boy-racer, so Donkey Kong Racing will do for me! Also Mario Kart is apparently going to change quite significantly from previous versions, as there are so many copy-cat racers out there now, Nintendo want to show the world that they can still innovate.

Any Ninties that are fans of realistic racers though will no doubt be happy that Ridge Racer 6 has finally been confirmed, and surely now that Codemasters are developing for Gamecube Colin McCrae will be on the way? Then there's Burnout as a launch title, and if trucking is your thing 18 Wheelers out at the end of May.

Dringo is right to raise RPG's as the missing genre though, where the N64 fared pretty badly. Holy Magic Century was a piece of crap! (Zelda, by the way, doesn't count).

The Japanese will certainly see the benefits of more RPG's on the Gamecube, with From Software working on a couple of games and Enix confirmed to develop for the Gamecube. Whether we'll see the benefit of that in Europe remains to be seen though.

The Gamecube does certainly seem to have a wider appeal than the N64 did, with more genres covered with top quality games.

Which is nice.

Tekken is rumoured so heavily at one point it was almost fact! DoA3 isn't exclusive forever and Techmo are working on Gamecube games! Remember DoA2 appeared on PS2 after Dreamcast one!

Killer Instinct isn't definate... i shouldn't of said anything!

When did this happen? I had no idea that Killer Instinct was coming home. Well that's raised my spirits.

Oh, and Resi, we do have V-Rally 3 and rumoured appearance of Rare's racer. So hopefully we will get to the level of the PS2 on these Genres.

The future looks to be litered with Multi-format titles. Anything that isnt 1st/2nd party has a good chance of coming out on all platforms.

The PS2 is also getting Soul Caliber along with Tekken 4, Virtua Fighter 4 and a few others. As for racers the gamecube isn't getting the latest in Gran Turismo, Colin Mcrae or any decent racer come to think of it. So your right the N64 did lack in those 2 genres and will have a hard time up against the PS2 :-)
