Now there’s a provocative title to catch your attention!

Does anyone remember those great Nintendo flops of old? The Virtual Boy- supposedly bringing 3D headsets home for the first time. Instead it was a headache inducing, monochromic, fuzzy system that needed to be re-tuned every half an hour and sported no more than half a dozen games.

Then there was the gallant 64DD- an add-on to the N64 that promised so much. It would let you go online, get extras for games and even make your own characters. Instead it was a one-trick-pony that supported a lacklustre list of games, had a very muted Japan-only launch and was only online-enabled for a short few months.

Finally, Project Reality- the CD based games system to replace the SNES. Before the unit was even finished Nintendo’s partners, Sony, quit, the company that was to make the chips for the consoles was changed, and Nintendo had to go back to the drawing board with a cart based console.

See the pattern? Every time Nintendo have tried to release a piece of kit that is ahead of its time (in this case VR headsets and online consoles), it tends to be poorly realised, and as a result the unit flops.

So, it comes as no surprise that Nintendo’s current approach to future gaming trends is very apprehensive…

The Gamecube is the only of the current generation of console not to have online plans firmly set. Meanwhile the opposition have modems, online games and gaming network plans almost ready to be implemented.

I doubt that this will be a huge problem for the console- it has the support to succeed in gaining back ground lost to Sony 6 years ago. However, it does worry you about the Nintendo’s future commitments. Will they continue to stay one step behind the pack when it comes to gaming advances- perpetually releasing their consoles last and with less “extras” than the rest?

Worryingly, my gut feeling to that is “yes”. At the moment this isn’t a big problem- the GC undercuts the price of the competition and aims at a different audience- young gamers and hardcore fans. But what happens if, in 5 years time, Sony too begin to market young gamers? What happens if the Nintendo console comes out so late that the price of the other consoles has dropped enough to cast doubt on which box to buy the kids? Then Nintendo would certainly be in trouble.

Ok, so maybe I’m being a bit melodramatic. Nintendo certainly aren’t going out of business any time soon. However, to realise its potential the company really must learn that the “wait and see” approach doesn’t always work- fate favours the bold.

Game glitches? THis is a console not a PC, you don't proper get glitches in console games, you have the occasional "if you walk backwards for 5 minutes then you can see through the wall" glitch but it's nothing too write home about.

Who the heck would want to play Championship manager on a console in the first place? If you really get your kicks out of looking at Football spreadsheets then surely you would be better off playing them on a PC?

I see the advantages of a hard drive, but sd cards will soon be doing mostly exactly the same things anyway, and be portable, while xbox's external memory unit is obviously currently a lot smaller, since because of the hard drive, its only use is using game data on different machines, not worth putting too much effort into yet, it seems. Wouldn't surprise me to see it in the future though.

Not sure how important the whole portablility issue will be, but for ninty owners there will be the advantage that, if they have the hardware, they can use a pc to get stuff from the net onto their sd card, then transfer it to the cube. So the only advantage of taking the cube online will really be online gaming. Then again, it was always the only big one.

1. Extras - DVD for a start...
2. Hardrive eh? well saves on memory cards... allows "game glitches" to be sorted out - patches, want a third reason? games like CHAMPIONSHIP MANAGER - best PC game ever gets a console release...
3. Internet? a HELL OF A LOT of gamers are interested... most FPS are very fun online, what about a 10 player Perfect Dark Zero deathmatch, fun eh?
4. DVD - wrong again, a lot of people i know who have PS2 also use it as a DVD player - not everyone is made of money, if you dont have a DVD already and a PS2 gives you goods from both worlds, it is an incentive... Further more, standard DVDs hold a hell of a lot more information than these mini-style-DVDs, more info = better graphics and/or longer game...

i too would be interested if YOU had anymore rubbish to spout...

Nintendo don't beleive that for the future there is any need too implement Internet capabilities and I would have too say I agree, the majority of gamers aren't intrested in getting their conosoles online. It's mainly for hardcore gamers and at the end of the day the majority of the user base are casual gamers.

Will they continue to stay one step behind the pack when it comes to gaming advances- perpetually releasing their consoles last and with less “extras” than the rest?

what extra's has the X Box and PS2 got that the Gamecube hasn't?

If you can think of any other i'd love to hear about them.

Oh and one other thing I swear the next person that says Nintendo is aimed at kids i'm gonna drag them out into the street and....well so help me God.

ehm? who is indian guy???

anyway interesting thread (i only looked at it, not bcos of the name but bcos you write it, and well unlike many other people you dont TEND to chat crap constantly...)

BUT i disagree about GC ONLY being aimed at kids, but indeed it mainly is as Ninty have admitted (an example is no GTA which ninty DID play a part in "blocking")

Hmmm, what else... the DD was a flop, and in fact any "add-on" is really always going to either flop, be undersubscribed or really annoy people - a bit more of the same, slightly "nicer" graphics at the cost of a new console - ha screwed you outta ya money again!

Project Reality was the code name for the N64! NOT the CD based "add-on" for the SNES! Nintendo never really made plans for a CD "replacement" for the SNES!

AAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRR! Not another PLEB who says the Gamecube is aimed at the younger gamer and hardcore fans! GGGGRRRRRRRRRRRR-AAAARRRRGGGHHHHHH!

Wave Race
Rogue Leader
ISS 2000
Luigi's Mansion
Super Monkey Ball
SSX Tricky
erm can't really remember any other launch titles off my head at the moment!

Anyways, my point is how many of those are aimed at kids????

Come on answer me???

The statement Nintendo is aimed at kids is getting as annoying as the term "casual gamer"! The next person who uses that phrase is gonna get a smack!!!!

grrr-argh
