We need to do something about spammers, I've posted a few good ideas which have been posted on Chat forums, But seriously now we have beening leaving such as IB and WS. Come on Staffies. We need to something!!

I beg.

----------

Idea 1 (Posted by VenomByte) :-

Seriously think Notables (or at least some people) should be given moderator powers. There are a good deal of forums around which aren't even as active as these, yet they appoint several moderators to help maintain things. These moderators only need be responsible forum members who are around a lot of the time - particularly times like evenings and weekends when staff are less likely to be around. They don't need full 'powers', just enough to stop abuse of the forums - i.e., ability to edit and delete posts.

As well as taking pressure of the staff, it would help improve the quality of things here. After all, it can't be a bad idea to appoint people who actually want to spend their time keeping the forums in shape...

----------

Idea 2 (posted by pb) :-

How about forums that you could only post in if you'd stayed longer than, say, 400 days or were given permission by staff? Something like that could work for a small number of forums, thereby not excluding those newbies from everything. After all, we were all new once (though, not in the current status sense).

----------

Idea 3 (posted by Ev][L~Dark) me :) :-

There must be some way it spilt apart the spammers and the good posters?
The FOG-Prime is only a place for the regulars, which is the only place where we can run too but can't chat in there.

How about if we did a Second FOG Chat only for Regulars and notables?

---------

There are many more ideas that we can think up, Come on Staffies!

Plus when I say decent, I just mean 'not obviously brain-damaged'. The post "Hi, I'm new on these forums, where do I put my coat?" would count, for instance.

There is nothing wrong with a good spam here and there, some spam is quite a light hearted laugh (5 threads in a row called Drunk Cow springs to mind). But you have to earn your wings to fly, and if you turn up on a forum and start posting nonsensical dross, retarded questions or trolling, then you don't deserve to stay. The people you mention, plus you, me, Drunk Cow and all the other regulars who post drivel from time to time, we earned the respect of our peers. It takes about ten decent posts to earn my respect, and in the 4-odd weeks I've been here, I've seen about 4 of perhaps 40 newbies do that. What a tragic state of affairs.

Damn straight (although I've not seen anyone bar me say it). Practically all the forums need at least one moderator, picked from the Regulars/Notables by SR staff. The rules on what is and is not acceptable behaviour should be extended, clarified and enforced to the letter.

Workable, with modifications. An 'age' restriction would let in all crap eventually, and good but relatively new people would be denied the ability to converse on some forums, which is not what we want. The system must serve us, not restrict us. Make some forums similar to how Prime is now - newbies unable to post, perhaps at all. This would be much better if newbies were only promoted by hand. After the 300 posts, a newbie gets reviewed by a staffer or mod - if they're suitable, they get promoted to regular. Only regulars get write-access to certain forums.

I think LtU&atJ pretty much covers that, though I like the idea of splitting forums between regulars and newbies. Keep FOGc open to everyone, but make FOGp, LtU&atJ and the Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft boards regular-only. Newbies can still read, but not post.

Harsh, but necessary. I've seen more dribbling retards in one month here than I have in close to three years on the rest of the internet. Something must be done.

Give me banning rights and the ability to delete topics.

You will all be pleased. I am a fair judge :)

I love the fact that everyone has a "holier than thou attitude". Who is a spammer, what percentage of posts which are spam do you have to have before you are considered a spammer. Two of the more popular members of the forums Mystique and Sheepy post very good articles at times but the rest of the time are hard core spammers, hell even i spam (off the record! lol). One mans junk is another mans treasure! a post which doesn't appeal to you maybe regarded by you a spam but to someone else it might be quite useful. Admittely there are spammers who just constantly spam, but these are the only ones which restrictions ie, banning are imposable upon. There can be no further splitting up off posters, the only thing that might work is moderators, and that is just to delete the stupid one line threads like "slipknot are better than Will Young, because he smells" kind of post. fairly passive moderation is the only real solution as far as i see, but really if we leave this a week, everyone will shut up and then we will have the same moans and debates about this topic in 2 or 3 months time!

Good point, :)

moderators would really keep control of things and make it so that there won't be too many notables, Make the Elections every 4 months?

I reckon Venombytes idea is a good one, I am a moderator for another site and it does work, all you would do is ask the regulars if they agree to a post being deleted or edited, and if they do agree then the relevant changes can be made.

I dont think increasing the amount of posts to become a regular would work though, because that would certainly encourage more spamming as newbies would try even harder to reach their 'all important' goal.

I agree with Ev][L~Dark's idea we should have a place where we can keep away from newbies and spammers and talk seriously.
