"Doing a United" - term used for when a team copies something new that Manchester United have brought to football. Often used by excited commentators. Tends to be over the top ITV men.

---------------------------------------

Has anyone else noticed how many new ideas Manchester United have brought to the game of football? The beautiful game must have been SOOO boring before Sir Alex and his merry men came along. Here are some examples:

Playing on the Counter-Attack
Before Man U. invented the counter-attack, football was a very slow paced game. As soon as the defence won the ball everyone would stop and allow the other team to regroup. Then United decided it would be easier if they just pegged it quickly up the other end of the field and scored.

Passing
United also invented the idea of passing. Before Beckham et al came along, teams would just thump the ball all the way up the pitch in the hope of scoring.

Playing for 90 minutes
Until recently it was very unusual for a game to last 90 minutes, because as soon as one team scored that was it. But then Man U decided that they would keep playing and "never give up", meaning that even if they went one-nil down they could still win the game.

Bringing on two strikers when 1-0 down in a cup game
An ingenious tactic, which allowed them to win more games. Closely linked to "Playing for 90 minutes" this tactic is especially useful if the two players being brought on are called Sheringham and Solskjaer, and normally results in commentators shouting "But wait, here comes Sheringham and Solskjaer!".

Scoring amazing team goals
Closely linked to "Passing" this tactic involves using more than one player to score a goal. The fact that the finish is normally a tap-in from 3 yards does not dent the amazingness of the goal, and usually results in it being goal of the season.

Scoring in the last minutes
Football matches only used to last for 85 minutes. The losing team would then give up as they would obviously never score now. United however, utilising the previous tactics of "Bringing on two strikers when 1-0 down in a cup game" and "Playing for 90 minutes", came up with the idea of scoring late on to win, or snatch a draw in games. Ingenious!

So there you have it. "Doing a United". Just think how boring football would be without all these things that Manchester United invented.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Doing a Man UTD should be in the dictionary under last second fluke or lucky buggers at 90 mins or there abouts when they're down 1 - 0 or similar.

in the 98/99 season chelsea scored nearly 3/4 of their seasons goals in the last 10 minutes and still do score loads of late ones. One cup final isn't really a trend but is more likely to spark a saying i admit.

Losing to bad teams but beating the good teams is a chelsea

doing a coventry was always escaping relegation and the last day of the season

Doing a henchoz means having a second keeper on the pitch.

Doing a york town is beating united

doing barthez is fumbling things

last minute goals is doing a chelsea

Doing a hursty is a hatrick in the world cup final

getting sent of is patented by roy kean and the arsenal team.

winning the league constantly is a united.

Ok then, how to play like a fat, un-fit Frenchman. Happy now?? But he still played better and created more chances than some of Arsenal's Frogs!

But still, Wiltord did a Homer!

What, miss a free-kick, have your name mentioned three times, and disappear into obscurity for the rest of the game? :-)

Maybe. Maybe not. I don't watch the Simpsons that often, so I didn't get it from there. But my friends do, and we sort of came to the conclusion together, one of them probably came up with the "Doing a United" bit, and I nicked that. So I didn't purposefully get it from the Simpsons, but it probably comes from there anyway!

Good post though, and it is all actually true!
Especially about the passing and the 2 late striker!
I think that these things are occuring more often because United have proven that it works! By winning 2 FA Cup and League doubles, the league a few more times, and even The Treble!! And now other teams want to be like them, so they try and play the samer way but it hardly ever works.

I also think that Arsenal 'pulled a Homer' yesterday when Wiltord scored that fluke against Everton. They also should have got a penalty and more free kicks, and Ginola showed the Gunners how to play like a Frenchman!
