"Doing a United" - term used for when a team copies something new that Manchester United have brought to football. Often used by excited commentators. Tends to be over the top ITV men.

---------------------------------------

Has anyone else noticed how many new ideas Manchester United have brought to the game of football? The beautiful game must have been SOOO boring before Sir Alex and his merry men came along. Here are some examples:

Playing on the Counter-Attack
Before Man U. invented the counter-attack, football was a very slow paced game. As soon as the defence won the ball everyone would stop and allow the other team to regroup. Then United decided it would be easier if they just pegged it quickly up the other end of the field and scored.

Passing
United also invented the idea of passing. Before Beckham et al came along, teams would just thump the ball all the way up the pitch in the hope of scoring.

Playing for 90 minutes
Until recently it was very unusual for a game to last 90 minutes, because as soon as one team scored that was it. But then Man U decided that they would keep playing and "never give up", meaning that even if they went one-nil down they could still win the game.

Bringing on two strikers when 1-0 down in a cup game
An ingenious tactic, which allowed them to win more games. Closely linked to "Playing for 90 minutes" this tactic is especially useful if the two players being brought on are called Sheringham and Solskjaer, and normally results in commentators shouting "But wait, here comes Sheringham and Solskjaer!".

Scoring amazing team goals
Closely linked to "Passing" this tactic involves using more than one player to score a goal. The fact that the finish is normally a tap-in from 3 yards does not dent the amazingness of the goal, and usually results in it being goal of the season.

Scoring in the last minutes
Football matches only used to last for 85 minutes. The losing team would then give up as they would obviously never score now. United however, utilising the previous tactics of "Bringing on two strikers when 1-0 down in a cup game" and "Playing for 90 minutes", came up with the idea of scoring late on to win, or snatch a draw in games. Ingenious!

So there you have it. "Doing a United". Just think how boring football would be without all these things that Manchester United invented.

The GingerLord would like to point out that he is actually a Man U supporter, and is simply pointing out how commentators seem to think that only Man U can do some of these things.

Yeah maybe I suppose. Sorry, it won't happen again.

Try telling the Chelsea team that there's no 'I' in 'team'!
Claudio Ranieri certainly can't, as he can hardly speak English!! And what about the Brazillians??

I think you'll find it works with Arsenal for the same reason it works with United - they're good team players, and they work well together.

Take, for example, David Ginola and Nicolas Anelka (at least when he was at Arsenal). Even Stan Collymore. Players like these are so far up themselves that they think the whole team should revolve around them, and while they may well have great individual skills, they are a disruptive influence on the rest of the team, and can turn out to be a waste of space on the pitch.

If a player doesn't get on at a club, for example with the manager - i.e. Ginola and George Graham - then you can easily dismiss it as a clash of personalities - no big deal.

But when the same thing starts to happen at each club the player goes to (i.e. Ginola and Gregory), then you have to say that it's most likely down to the player thinking they're better and more important than they actually are.

It's a very old cliche, but it's true - there is no 'I' in 'team'. It doesn't matter how good a player is, how many goals they score, or how much they earn - no single player is ever better or more important than the club they play for.

So... that's why we play good football. A squad of TEAM players, with great skills.

Seriusley though, I do not hate all foreigners, but I don't really like how loads of clubs flood there squads with players from all over the world. And I don't like Eriksson cuz he's Swedish and shouldn't be England manager, but I still like England.

Too many foreigners doesn't work, look at Chelsea! But for some reason it kinda works for Arsenal, maybe cuz they're all French, and Chelsea are mixed???

Not ALL foreigners, just ones that dive (CHEATS!) and handball (HENCHOZ!). And United only have 3 Frenchmen (Blanc, Barthez, Silvestre), while Arsenal have........1,2,3,4,5....6,7,8,.....

Doing an Arsenal would be scoring the goal to put you 2-0 up in the dying minutes against the team currently at the top of the league to leapfrog over them and win the title on the last day of the season.

Even a non-Arsenal fan would have to say that was one of the greatest moments in the history of league football.

You really do have a problem with other races and cultures, don't you? Ironic, considering the number of foreigners ('Frogs' included) in the United team.

Who cares?! It went in, and that's what counts. It could have deflected off his butt while he was mooning the keeper for all I care!
