I like being able to drive, particularly when there's not much traffic on the roads. Unfortunately, when the traffic picks up, all of the bad drivers seem to be on the roads.

I find driving increasingly more frustrating, due to increasing levels of traffic on the roads. I find it quite shocking that people will drive less than a mile to wander into town! If they intend to buy something rather heavy, then fine, use the car to get it home, but Christ, driving such a little distance to save your legs from walking? Laziness.

No one enjoys sitting in a queue, but what some people will do is just crazy. Yesterday I witnessed one man go into a layby that the bus uses to pick up passengers, drive straight through it, then along the pavement for about 6 car lengths, before rejoining the road. What's worse is that someone else followed him!

I've always thought that traffic lights were simple things to understand. If you're sitting in a queue, it's quite clear when you're about to start moving. So why do I so often find myself waiting for cars in front to move off? And why do the lights always go back red before I get past? If these people had ben a little more aware, we'd all have been on our way a little quicker.

What's worse, is when there's a green light allowing traffic to go left, whilst those going ahead aren't moving, and you find someone in the left-hand lane waiting. Just a little awareness is all you need, so why are they waiting? Don't they have homes to go to?

Lane discipline is another very frustrating factor when it comes to driving, or more specifically, other people's lack of it. I'm sick of getting cut up on roundabouts because someone is sitting in the wrong lane. Motorways and dual carriageways show the worst cases when it comes to lane discipline. Believe it or not, the lane on the right is NOT 'the fast lane'. It's an overtaking lane. You move back into the left-hand lane once you're past the vehicle you're overtaking. You don't just stay in there going at 65mph, because you don't want to get stuck behind a lorry.

On the subject of lorries, do they not care if you're besides them when they want to change lanes? I've lost count of the number of times I've almost been forced off the road because of a lorry. And they just love to overtake each other, don't they?

What's with these drivers that only seem capable of one speed? I've followed a car traveling at 45mph in a 60 zone, and once we get into a village, and the speed limit drops, I slow down to 30mph, they don't even slow down a little! Just keep on going on at 45mph. Maybe they just took an average of all the speed limits they were going to travel through, and stuck at that one speed?

Are buses excused from speed limits? There's bus lanes all around Cambridge these days, and I often find buses coming past me, when I'm traveling at the speed limit. Ever seen a bus pulled over for speeding? How do they get away with it? And why do they always pull back onto the road after stopping at a bus-stop without looking for any traffic? They just stick on the indicator, and go.

In Cambridge, probably other places too, they have joint bus and cycle lanes. Now I can't help but think that there's a bit of a mis-match there. A bus is somewhat bigger than a cycle, and can go much faster. I wouldn't like to be the cyclist in the cycle lane, with a bus squeezing past, because it's their lane too!

Not that I have much sympathy for the majority of cyclists. Some of them seem to have some degree of understanding of the highway code, but others are just plain dangerous. Giving hand signals doesn't give you the right to just cut across the road, you've still got to look where you're going. Cycle lanes, they're a good thing. So why so many cyclists on a busy road, without lights, when there's a safer place for them to be? I don't get it!

So I get frustrated, but I don't get angry, life's too short. I get home eventually, and move on. So why do people get so worked up?

'Road Rage' seems to be an excuse for violent acts. If someone beat a man in the street, they'd get a worse punishment than a man that did it to another road user, because it's 'road rage'. No, you're a crazy fool if you attack another road user because they're not travelling at the speed you want to travel at. I've been sittign at a roundabout, and had someone sit behind me beeping their horn. Once I got onto the main road, they overtook me, then slammed on the brakes. What the hell was the point of that? Make me crash into the back of him? Bah! I was too aware though, and hit the brakes myself in time. What did he plan to do though? Nutter.

I like driving. But not enough to drive in a circuit, the same area, again and again. What is the point of Barrying? Maybe these Barry-boys think they're playing Mario Kart or something, and have to do five laps before they can move on. Their cars aren't often much bigger than kart's either, Unos, Fiats, Fiestas. I guess some have less inteligence that Donkey Kong too.

Every day I see such stupid things, and every day I could be getting into my car for the last time, because so many people out there don't realise the dangers of driving like idiots.

It's not just a matter of being a good driver yourself, you've got to be prepared for the random craziness of all those other road users out there too.

The *majority* of car drivers in my experience are complete wa... erm, tankers who sholdn't be allowed on the road. The have no courtesy to those around them.

I don't drive - I cycle to and from work, and use the miserable excuse that passes for public transport if I want to go any significant distance - and the times I've had run-ins with car drivers is unbelievable.

I should point out that I am a responsible cyclist, and I do know the highway code. I've lost count of the times I've been cut up by a moron driver. Pulling out in front of me at roundabouts; leaving me about 2 inches of space as they whiz past, etc. By far the worst incident was an idiot who decided to overtake me and then cut across in front of me to turn left, rather than wait for me to clear the turning; I went into the side of the car at around 25mph, got thrown into the middle of the road, almost run over by a car coming iin the other direction. And it cost me £200 for new forks on my bike - couldn't claim off the driver, even with an off-duty policeman as a witness, because the driver didn't stop.

Cycle lanes - I would gladly use them, except there are very few in Northampton - at least in areas where I want to go. I live on a major housing estate, and I work on a major industrial estate a mile and a half away. And there isn't one cycle lane between the two! Yet a mile in the other direction, there is a cycle path which runs along the front of a Focus DIY store; it's all of 100 metres long! What use is that?

Between my house and Northampton town centre (a distance of about 4.5 miles) there is just one cycle lane, which runs for about 800 metres as you get into the busier area of town... and then stops. At the traffic lights there are very short cycle lanes, which lead to a larger green area - supposedly for cyclists to get in front of the cars so that they are seen and can pull away first. Simply not good enough - and even if you did want to use it, you usually can't because the moron driver at the front of the queue has over-shot and come to a stop in it.

Add to that that most car drivers simply ignore cycle lanes anyway (either driving over them or parking in them) and the whole idea of cycle lanes is a waste of time.

We need a system similar to Holland/Denmark, where cycle lanes have their own lights seperate from the main traffic lights, and certain cycle lanes at dangerous junctions are seperated from the main road by a slightly raised kerb to ensure that cars don't intrude.

The usual comeback from drivers at this point is along the lines of "Well who's going to pay for it? Cyclists don't pay road tax." That may be true, but then we aren't the ones damaging roads, creating jams and polluting the atmosphere. And I would be willing to pay some kind of cycle tax *IF* the concerns of cyclists were taken into account and the situation with cycle paths remedied.

And I still believe it should be a requirement of the driving test that everyone should first have to spend between 3 and 6 months riding a bike in all conditions, to teach them not only how difficult it can be, but also so that they may gain some respect for other road users in general.

Let's face it - people are lazy. Like the people who drive to the gym to use the running/cycling machine. Madness.

Good post though!
