"MS don't know what they're doing! They've never released a console before!"
Now, I personally think that it is a good thing that MS haven't released a console before. They have not been.... affected could be the right word. They have not been affected by the industry.
And this is a good thing.
They have no preconceived ideas about how "things should be done" and the "way things are" which are two factors that can stifle the growth and development of any industry.
Think about it.
When Sony came in with the PSX, ok, they'd had a little help from Nintendo, but then decided to go their own way. What did they do?
Realise that cartridges were crap and CD's were the way to go. Who's to say that if Sony hadn't done that, then we'd still be playing from cartridges today?
The benefits of CD outweighed the negatives, as far as Sony were concerned. More room for data storage, much better sound quality etc
Nintendo still used cartridges for the N64, and some would say that they suffered for it.
Sony in their "ignorance" won the day, as some would say.
So let's bring ourselves up to the future.
MS release the XBox. They have no preconceived ideas. They haven't been swayed by anything. They want online gaming, so chuck an ethernet card in. They want to be able to download stuff, so chuck a HDD in as well.
How long would it have taken for these things to become standard if MS hadn't done them? I know that Sega started the ball rolling with online console gaming, but would Sony have taken up the challenge?
Would Sony be releasing a HDD? Would we be talking about playing online FFXI this summer? Or online PD 2 on the GC?
Or would we have had to wait until the PS3 and the GC2?
Sony have already said that they may bring the release of the PS3 forward to combat MS, so the XBox is obviously having some effect on the industy.
And it's an effect for the positive, in my view.
Lot's of questions, not man answers, at least by me. Thoughts?
THe Console market is absolutly huge now, and I think there is easily enough space for 3 consoles to succeed.
Gamecube has been predicted to take the lowest market share of the 3 consoles by most market analysts.
I hate microsoft. lowercase of purpose, they are terrible.
