I usually stick to a few Half-Life mods, they're fun and more importantly, free. I'd recommend, Day of Defeat, Firearms, Team fotress and Natural Selection, all great online games.
Battlefield 1942 is o.k. but gets pretty boring online after a while, counter strike is still used a lot, also unreal tournament 2003 but it all depends on what sort of games you like.

TO sucks if you're on 56k though, can't hit sod all. Battlefield is good, if you have a good enough PC to run it. I'm upgrading to a GeForce 4 in a few months, so it should play like a beast :)
