The continued success of the Playstation 2s older brother has been contributed to by the retailers cooperation in selling the games at affordable prices, in comparison to the £45 release prices for games on the GameCube and X-box, and even up to £70 on Nintendo's games on older systems! Paying no more than £25 for a new game on the Playstation (unless you were stupid enough to shop at Game), you could and still can buy many top games, Fifa 2003 and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets being but two.
So, logically, with deals being very good on Playstations and the newish smaller version named the PSOne being much more portable and extending the lease of life given to the Playstation, many parents have bought a version of the original Playstation for their children for Christmas. After all, with the unspoken promise of many games for a long time yet, and cheap prices on the games and accessories, the Playstation One seems the perfect present for a child, no?
Indeed, no.
The reason being, Sony are rumoured to be dropping a dump on the heads of parents who bought their children the Playstation One this festive season by announcing that production of the Playstation is to come to an end.
What does this mean?
Well, for Sony, it means they can increase the amount of warehouse and factory space for Playstation 2s, increase efforts into the design and development of the tentatively titled 'Playstation 3'.
However, for the consumer, it means that they will have to resort to buying grubby controllers, scratched discs and torn manuals all contained in little or no packaging from retailers lucky enough to have such 'quality' in store. If the gamers of the world were all as selfish as me, have our way, the stores wouldn't have any pre-owned games as everyone would keep what they've got and collect games. However, without people trading in their games at local retailers, you wouldn't see an increase of hardcore gamers, or as I call them bounty hunters, with their long leather jackets, brown cord' trousers and greeny-gray shirts as well as their shoulder-length, greasy hair and unshaven faces, entering every store in their locality every day looking, hunting and gathering games in their rarity. This will soon happen to Playstation games as it already does Game Boy Original, Nintendo Entertainment System, Sega Master System and Super Nintendo games! The fate of the name Playstation is inevitable, the console's best quality discs will be snapped up by loners in leather!
If a store advisor points you in the direction of the PSOne, kick him in the nutty regions. If someone says the games are going cheap, tell the the facts, and they will soon see why. If you really hate someone, tell them to buy a Playstation!
The Playstation is dead! Finito! Kablammied! In the morgue! If you want to play Playstation games, get a Playstation 2!
On the other hand, think of the Dreamcast gamers, who despite being without new games for more than enough months to be considered torture, have held their heads high, defended the defenseless and have continued to enjoy the console, despite peoples ridicule. At the end of the day, every console stops production eventually. It is an inevitable fact. But remember, you paid a lot of money for you console and your games, and just because they aren't the most popular anymore, doesn't mean they are crap. Play your Playstation games, enjoy them, buy more whilst you still can, and sit in wait of the very Merry Christmas announcement that Sony will be giving to the parents of the kids of the world very soon.
Production of the Playstation One and its games has come to an end.
Don't believe me?
Wait and see.
The best "games machine" is the PS2 due to it's high number of games.
The "best games" machine is the GC as it has the mostplayable games.
then there's the X-box.
Still - speaks volumes that a lot if people are still buying PSone rather than the other cheaper alternatives to PS2. :-)
Software sells consoles, not specs.
Nevertheless the Playstation one is a damn fine system... with Tony Hawks and Harry Potter and Final Fantasy plus a few unknown titles still supporting it, it will keep people who cannot afford a PS2 (the most expensive console, the weakest console, the highest concentration of software) happy.
However, when production of the consoles stops, it is very likely that the games will too.
It is rumoured that Fifa 2003 is the very last PSX game.
In which case, what of the classics which are constantly being given new life on the PSone?
Will the trend be forced to stop or will they be sold as PS2 format discs, costing us a lot more no doubt.
Although it is fair to say that the Playstation was most definately not the best console to be ever released, it was the start of the revolution that made videogames outside of Japan 'cool'.
As you may well know, the ZX Spectrum (the first videogames machine to become widely available) was really popular, even though it only sold in the hundred thousands, and so, despite selling better than Sir. Clive Sinclair could have ever predicted, wasn't enough to make people play games on their TVs much, and so the computer nerd was born.
Other computer companies decided to do similar, and so the Commodore, Amstrad and Atari systems were released. But it wasn't until Nintendo released the NES, and a number of years, Sega with the Master System. But not even their sequel-systems, the SNES and MegaDrive were enough to bring gaming to the masses. So, whilst Sega and a number of hopeful developers were twiddling their thumbs, Nintendo tried to make gaming more costly (to the public) yet more popular with the SNES add-on called the N-CD. However, due to a major disagreement, Sony and Nintendo didn't go through with their deal and Sony kept the rights to the N-CD - despite not being able to use the name as it was Nintendo's. Hence, the name 'Playstation' (which is only rumoured to be owned by Nintendo).
Sony's Playstation uses an easy to copy format and was an easy machine to make games for. So, many major developers left the security of Nintendo and Sega to try something new - and so Sony wet themselves in excitement as many major franchises started appearing on their systems! Including Tomb Raider, Command & Conquer, Doom and the bringer of doom for Hiroshi Yamauchi, the former president of Nintendo.co, Final Fantasy.
Suprisingly, although it knocked them off the top spot, Nintendo weren't too badly effected by the massive sales in the Playstation, especially after making excessive profits on their really expensive games (which is why they have now been fined). Nintendo, although not selling so many units of their main consoles, had the Game Boy to make up for their lack of Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 sales, and because it was the only handheld to last more than a couple of years before production ended, massive franchises could be started on it, so being available to a much bigger audience than Sony's Playstation could ever reach.
However, people preferred to play their games on the TV. And so, Sony's Playstation console became the best selling TV-videogames console to date, and as I have already said, is still selling well. It was a mixture of having the best games, availability and being considered the 'Nike' of the gaming world that made it so popular, and dragged Sega to the state they are in now.
Without a massive gaming audience, there would be no point in Microsoft entering the console business, especially when they know that they'll have to price their products at competetive rates to stand a chance.
The Playstation is very likely to be the console everyone compares the new ones to, especially as its production is due to end very soon.
So even if you hate the Playstation, you have to give it credit for what it has done to the videogames market of today.

So I assume you are an Xbox owner.

And as an Xbox owner, you really should think about things before you make such misguided comments.
Without PlayStation? Highly likely there would be no Gamecube, no Xbox and - quite possibly - no games market.
Videogames were always a niche market with limited appeal, and I doubt you'd have anything like the selection available today if PlayStation hadn't happened.
Sure, you can say it was Nintendo's idea - but they dropped the ball when they pulled out. It's Sony who picked it up and ran with it.
And as much as you slate the current market - without it, it's unlikely you'd have your Xbox. Do you really think Microsoft would have been interested in launching a console if Sony hadn't converted it to the megabucks industry it is?

Rule One - never talk about Ninty Club.
Rule Two - Never talk about Ninty Club.

then I shall refuse to listen.
nice post actually, I really did read it all. i have to say i hate the playstation: it was the biggest reason gaming is like it is today: 90% crap, with Joe Average buying it because of a liscence it may have or the fact its a film spin off.
there is one good use for a psone though. anyone ever see in old copies of NOM, (when it t'was good) a feature where Nintys got the team to go round to people's houses who had rival consoles (psOne, saturn, mega drive) and smash them to bits? it had nice pictures too, of the dead consoles. mwhahahaha!
