Manchester United are expected to issue a statement following claims that Sir Alex Ferguson is prepared to stay on as manager.

Ferguson was due to retire at the end of this season.

But it is believed he may be ready to make a u-turn and stay for another year, possibly longer.

The Old Trafford club could make a statement on the matter on Tuesday.

Reports say the 60-year-old had hinted that he would consider remaining in charge beyond his proposed retirement date in May.

United had on Monday denied reports that Ferguson had had a dramatic change of heart and they later refused to comment beyond saying that a statement would be released to the City later.

Last month Ferguson had been quick to quash similar speculation that he may change his mind about retiring.

But now it seems that he may have had a genuine change of heart over the weekend.

It is being suggested that Ferguson could stay on for another year as a stopgap because United are struggling to replace him.

In another 12 months targets such as Celtic's Martin O'Neill and Roma's Fabio Capello would be at the end of their contracts, while Sven-Goran Eriksson might be more amenable about quitting England.

keane has absolutely no managerial experience and i don't think letting him start off at one of the biggest clubs in the worlds to practice on is a good idea

I still only want him to sign a new one year deal, so that Cappello/O'Neil can sign for free next summer. But only one year may mean that Beckahm won't sign! I also think that Veron will stay at least one more year, and that the lone-striker thing is no more! I also believe that another reason as to why Fergie is staying is due to the fact that he may have his eye on a new no.9 this summer!!

Keane as new manager??? LOL! He'll go and join Celtic before he's appointed as Sir Alex's succeeder!

I'm glad he's staying on, but staying for three years I'm not too sure about. He does have to retire sometime, and if we want someone like Fabio Capello, we'd need to sign him at the end of next season when his contract runs out. I can't see him signing a 2 year contract just on the offchance he'll get the utd job, so in three years time we're going to have the same manager problem again.

Most signs are pointing to Fergie signing a three year contract...

Beckham should sign a new contract now...

We should get our money back for Veron at the end of the season...

All is good in the world of Man Utd...

Oh yeh, and I also heard Keane is being lined up to be the next United manager. What do you think about that? Surely he knows United inside out by now? His influence over the players is immense, I reckon he would be a great manager.

Although The one man upfront could be a good idea in Europe. It worked in Munich.

Just Never use it in the premiership...

Roma have said Capello aint going anywhere.

Fergie aint done so bad. Sure, maybe he went a step too far after selling Stam and tinkering about with the tactics but I'm sure we will be sorted out come Summer.

Blanc will retire, we will get Hofland/Ayala/Nesta/cannavarro or someone similar.

Fergie has learnt this season not to **** around with the team. Maybe in his last season he thought everything would go his own way...Hope he has learnt his lesson.

I don't think Man Utd fans hate Wenger.... I have a lot of respect for him personally. He may be a bit off with his defence of players who are clearly guilty, but his opinions on other matters, and his views on football I totally agree with. He's not afraid to voice those views either, so I respect him for that.
