XBox Live works on a peer-to-peer system. So for it to work the speed of the game ie lag is determined by the lowest connection. So if everyone in the game was running a 512/256 connection and say someone with a 56k modem was aloud to join then the speed of the game would lag alot due to the 56k being the lowest connection.
PC online games work differently as you connect to a main server and you communicate with that server, so if you have a smooth connection with the server your alright, even if there are people lagging.
So for all you people with NTL 128k you will need to upgrade to use XBox Live.

Well maybe, but dont forget PC games are different to XBox games read this document

Microsoft may implement a speed check when you log in so that if your Upload or Download rate is too slow you cant get on. As really 56k user could get on, as they set up the ICS connection like I use and instead of having a 512/256 internet connection they use a 56k instead. When you select XBox Live on the dashboard you can do a link test which tests that every thing is working, as well as giving information on the Ping and upload and download rates. If these are too low then the system may not allow you to log on.
A ping just shows how long a small amount of data will take to get between the players.
If I do, then there will be problems...
I haven't even got an Xbox and I'm making it sound like I have...

Yes but pings dont mean data can flow. I have seen 20K/s being uploaded from my connection thats an upload speed of 160k when you download is only 128k. Do you actually use the connection to play XBox Live? If not then how do you know its going to be fast enough? What if Microsoft dont allow you on live, as everytime you log in they check your speeds, as thats a option in the XBox Live menu, to test pings and dl/ul rates.
128k is easily fast enough, well for me it is as the green box is across the road!
I can get pings as low as 15...
