I know alot of people out there are wondering whether a 128K connection will work for XBox Live. The answer is NO. After some research I have found out that a 256k Download and a 128K upload is needed ie 256/128. NTL have a 600/128 which would work fine, they also have 1024/256. ADSL comes in the form of 512/256.

XBox Live works on a peer-to-peer system. So for it to work the speed of the game ie lag is determined by the lowest connection. So if everyone in the game was running a 512/256 connection and say someone with a 56k modem was aloud to join then the speed of the game would lag alot due to the 56k being the lowest connection.

PC online games work differently as you connect to a main server and you communicate with that server, so if you have a smooth connection with the server your alright, even if there are people lagging.

So for all you people with NTL 128k you will need to upgrade to use XBox Live.

www.adslguide.org.uk is a good site for seeing which exchanges are close to being considered for upgrading to broadband, and for all other things broadband.

Well Satellite downstream is pretty cheap at about £30 but you do need to send data through a modem. ISDN is too slow its a dual 64K line, so you would pay for 2 phone calls at once, and alot of ISP's dont support ISDN 128. This mish mash of connections wont even connect to XBox Live. As I have said the requirement is 256/128 and only Cable and ADSL can offer this sort of speed cheaply. If you are 5.5km away from an exchange, can you get Cable? If you have Cable TV then you should get Cable Internet. I personnally would rather have Cable than ADSL and go for the 1024/256 connection but Cable isnt in our area. If you can get ADSL or Cable then I am affraid you wont be able to get XBox Live.

And surely Satallite broadband would have incredibly high pings?

ISDN isn't good enough either!

You'll have to either go with your local cable company or get broadband...

Done that loads of times but i found out that i am further than 5.5km away from my exchange so it is out of the question. I was wonderingthough with satalite broadband you have to send through your normal modem well if i got isdn would that be fast enough as i would get the downstream with broadband and get the up stream with isdn.

Two way would work with XBox Live in theroy as it has 640/128 or 768/128, with some even 1024/128 or 2048/128. The spec for XBox Live is 256/128. Normal Satellite would work as you only have satellite for download, so you may get 256k download but your upload would be that of a 56K modem which is probably only 20k. As Tom said it is very expensive. http://www.bridgebroadband.co.uk/ offer a 640/128 connection at £209 per month for a minimum of 36 months. A total of £7524 for the 36 month period.

The only way you will get on to XBox Live is if you have ADSL or Cable. If you cant get either in your area then ring up BT and enquiry about ADSL. There are alot of exchanges that are being considered if the number of people interested is high enough. There is a site which details information about this, search on google to see what comes up. By the time XBox Live is officially released in March, alot more people will have ADSL as BT are upgrading exchanges all the time.

Can't remember the one where I orignally got the price for, but I've found some.

http://www.broadbandsatellite.co.uk/index.htm has a list of providers on the left of the page. Or you could search for two way satellite broadband.

Looking at these providers...

It certainly isn't cheap! Costing £120+ just for a month. It's aimed more at businesses.
