in my opinion, sequels are never as good as the originals.
i would think many people agree with this as well.
the reason for this is usually developers want to cash in on more money rather than make a good game.
another reason could be that it's not so original making it
more predictable in whats going to happen.
However there have been good sequels, for example Final Fantasy. we are coming up to it's 10th installment now.
other good sequels could include sonic the hedgehog or mario. (maybe crash bandicoot but it's gone a bit far now)
there have also been some disastrous sequels like Pandemonium, or even the well known army men games.
anyway, these days there are almost more sequels than there are original games, so give your opinion on this, even suggest some sequels you're bored of, or suggest some ORIGINAL games you would like to see.

Is there any reason why a game cannot be both a sequel AND an original concept?

Just because it continues a story, or contains the same characters, it doesn't mean that it will play the same as the first game at all.

Look at the evolution of Mario, for an example of originality in sequels. From Mario Bros to Super Mario Bros is a complete change in direction. From bug-squasher to platformer. SMB2 changed again, with different types of enemies, picking stuff up and throwing it, multiple characters to choose from. Though SBM3 returned to the stlye of SMB it was so much more on the original, with a world map, and the number of items and different suits you could use. It was excellent.

The thing is, these were all on the same platform. That's what's really impressive about them. With thesame technology, huge advances were made. Yes, when it jumped from NES to SNES the improvements were again huge, but you'd expect that. The N64 was designed to bring 3D gaming, so again such evolution was expected - though it is an amazing game.

There is no excuse for a sequel that's too similar to the original. Laziness on the behalf of the developer that wants to make more money from the franchise, so they use the same engine, and just build some new levels. The problem is if the original is popular, the sequel will sell if it's not so good.

Personally, I like to see the same characters in many, many games. Sticking Mario in so many titles is something which I hope Nintendo continue to do. Mario Kart, Mario Pary and Mario Tennis are all outstanding, and rather than use the big character to release a weak game, if anything I see it as a sign of quality. Nintendo want to keep their franchises popular, and understand that a few bad games can ruin a reputation.

Sequels are often the most anticipated games, because of the strength and originality of the originals. Continue to make the series innovative and fun, and people will continue to buy the games. Rehash the same thing over and again, and they'll lose interest.

Game Sequels are always better than the originals!!!

not convinced??

Super Mario 64
(16bit mario world to this)

Metal Gear Solid 2
(32 bit to 128 bit)

Grand Theft Auto 3
(2D to 3D)

Final Fantasy X
(FMV on DVD and better graphics)

SSX: Tricky
(no flickering board, caving in sky, added DVD extras and more)

Silent Hill 2
(huge improvement over original)

Timesplitters 2
(better single player and graphics are immense)

Gran Turismo 3
(best example)

In most cases improvements and enhancements are made to the sequels, ok the originality may drop a little but they are better.

But sequals can be worse. Like Kick off 3 on the Amiga. It was far worse than the brilliant Kick off 2!

Yes sometimes sequel's can get over done and are usually not as good as the original. Then there is the case of when a sequal is better than the original. Games such as GTA 3 and Final Fantasy have been very good sequals and I accually can't wait for the next sequals from these games.
