What's a good animated gif creator to use?
I'm currently using unfreez, because it's free, but quite frankly it's not very good.

I'm looking for something free that works with Windows XP and that allows you to alter the length between each frame individually.

Any suggestions?

The best compression engine out there belongs to FireWorks4, this will create tiny animations and has the best previewing tool available on the market. If notm try Image Ready by Adobe, it's compression engine comes second to FW4

Like twain, i use GIF Construction Set Pro. To add to what twain said, it has a very nice compressor (though it doesn't work with transparancy enabled, but you can get around that quite easily. Also, it was very easy to learn enough to do most anything you want with it.
Not technically 'free', but there's no timer on it to limit how long you can use the full 'trial' before you have to pay the $20 registration. Basically, you can download it free, and need only register it when you need to legally use your gifs on a site or something.

I would recommend Macromedia Fireworks, you can get it from either www.macromedia.com or from download.com. It's extremely easy to use and it has it's own size compression tool so you can say how small you want the file to be.

I always use GIF Construction Set Pro. It does have built in effects, and you can change each frame individually if you want. It even has a little button on each frame that says "Paint". Clicking on it will open a temporary file of the frame inside your most used graphics program eg. Paint, Paintshop or Photoshop, which is very handy.

Also, the dissolve efect doesn't look pixellated like the one on PowerPoint or other Microsoft programs.

You can enable transparency, which browsers DO recognise, and therefore, you can make images that aren't always square, like SR's ad banners at the top there.

See http://mindworkshop.com or email me and I'll send you a copy.

Are you looking for something wiv built in effects? Microsoft Gif Animator is good. It hasn't got any built in effects but it's a tiny file to download. Try getting Paint Shop Pro - it comes with a really good animation package that does all sorts. It's even got a built in 'download time estimator' and a compressor.
