A short while ago Granada news (Lancashire) reported that a boy had developed industrial hand syndrome from playing on a games console, It’s where your hands and fingers swell up obviously seen in people working with industrial tools. I don’t know much about it but it’s serious enough for NHS to be treating him in hospital so can’t be minor. The report later explained how he played on a games console up to 7 hours a day (which is a similar length to which I sometimes play), but more importantly he suffered from a condition where his hands go white in the cold and developing this syndrome was probably related. They said he got it from using a controller with a “rumble feature” but didn’t say which, they showed a picture of both a Saturn controller and a dreamcast controller (may have been examples). It went on how playstation games give a warning to take a break every 30 minutes (actually every hour) which this person didn’t do.

Now this scared the hell out of me and I’ll tell you why. I used to go to bording school and 6 days a week we played sport, Most of the time it was freezing and I always got told off for having my hands up my sleeves because it hurt to move them. In cold places (usually outside) my hands start to turn white from the fingers down and started to go num, trying to move them is very difficult and feels like you have a pair of skiing gloves on, only painful!!! It’s a condition known as Raynauds, It’s not a disease or anything seriously wrong but just the blood vessels in my hands and feet are very sensitive to temperature.

My parents finally listened to me and took me to the doctor, he explained a bit about it and said don’t hold cold objects, don’t smoke and “anything that vibrates” will aggravate it!!! I figured this means drills, chainsaws and powerful tools not small things, but today i realised the dual shock and other rumble controllers sit in the palm of your hands and heavy usage can't be a good thing.

There’s still a lot of health issues not realised with videogames, It took many years for people to realise TV's weren't a raditation risk but later found that playing with the lights off causes more strain to your eyes, The closer you are to the screen the worse it is and many more related problems. The best way around it is to take that 15-minute break every hour as instructed in most game manuals and just limit yourself, I am

Good point Sonic.

Maybe he's a mutant, and his power is wobbly hands, either that or he's stupid.

I wonder if anyone has ever put a vibrating controller in their pants.

For the record, I have not.

Well, the story is actually in all the morning papers, and on radio...

Basically, it was ONE kid who found that his PS2 dual shock controller caused hiw hands to swell.

Now, not only was it ONE kid, but this ONE kid also played for hours on end, taking no breaks and CONTINUING to play EVEN THOUGH he was in PAIN. If you ask me, it's HIS fault for being so IMMATURE.

If you were told that someone had been drinking hot tea, found that it was burning their throat, but carried on drinking cups and ended up in hospital, don't you think you'd find it stupid of them?
