Final Fantasy have a great edge here, their orchestration and mood setting melodies are undoubtedly great, and make the game a lot more absorbing.

Roll Cage also has a kickin' soundtrack (Fat Boy Slim et al), but the ultimate for me is flying down the antigrav track in your Feistar racer on WipeOut with the speakers turned ALL the way up, that game you can really get into.

Any other gaming soundtracks that can do this?

"Atom Bomb" by Fluke in Wipeout 2 should go down as an all time gamers' anthem I reckon.

The music to Diablo is a lot like Paranoid Android by Radiohead, the start bit, lot like the background in Paranoid Android.

So it didn't even bother to create original music for the game itself? That's just weak, you may as well just mute the volume and put a CD on.

Of course, when talking about excellent soundtracks, you can't forget the Gran Turismo series.

The two games so far feature music from the likes of Garbage, Ash, Fat Boy Slim, etc. and I even remember seeing somewhere that the intro theme for GT2 (which is originally by the Cardigans) was remixed by the Chemical Brothers. The intro theme to GT1 is also by someone well-known too, but their name escapes me at the moment...

Personally I don't think that you can beat the soundtrack to Sensible Soccer (Euro Championship Ed. 1988). The wonderful sound of a PC beeping without the need for separate speakers and soundcard....
