Since the surprise sale of Andy Cole to Blackburn, Manchester United have been on the search for a new no.9. What they need is someone who will work hard, score goals, help them win more trophies, and keep on playing well alongside Ruud van Nistelrooy, regularly. Even before Cole was sold they've been linked with the likes of Patrick Kluivert, Ronaldo and Gabriel Batistuta! But the only real problem they've had with trying to get these players is trying to sort out the finacial side of things, with the player's agents and clubs. So it's obvious that United need someone new, who should it be???

Diego Forlan - He has only recently signed from Indipendiente for £6.9m, without being issued a squad number yet. He is unknown to us over here, but has been rated highly in South America, as quite a goal-scorer and Uruguayan international! Fergie may just be waiting for Yorke to move on, so Forlan can be no.19, or he may be considering him for the no.9 jersey??

Patrick Kluivert - The goal-scoring Duthcman has previously hinted that he'd like to play in the Premiership, for either Arsenal or United! So that would mean less of a problem agreeing a deal with the player, but what about his club?? They're hardly gunna let their star striker go on the cheap, and may not even consider a deal at all!! Kluivert would have to request a move! And they wouldn't be too worried, they ONLY have Javier Saviola ready to replace him!!

Ronaldo - The way I see it, there's just no way that Inter would ever cosnider letting their Brazilian superstar leave! Unless of course he requires even more knee surgery! But would United be ready to splash out upto £50 on an injury-prone striker?? Recent rumours have also specu;ated that Inter would be ready to talk if a sway deal with David Beckham!! But United would never let that happen!

Gabriel Batistuta - Possibly the the greatest Argentinian striker since Maradona! United haven't been alone in showing interest for him, but he's never seemed to be too interested in joining one of the 'bigger clubs'? He has saved Roma on several occasions this season, and I therefore see no chance of him leaving! And even if he did leave, they'd want at least £30m! And he is getting on a bit!

John Carew - He has proven himself as a goal-scorer at various levels, and has now found himself bizzarly playing in the reserves for Valencia! He recently failed in a move to Fulham, due to a medical, and I think that he could be the type of striker United need, even if you lot don't! He can be strong and powerfull (in the air and on the ground) and he can also be a good, consistant finnisher. The only problem is that there's specualtion over a possibly serious knee problem, and questions are being asked as to why he's in the reserves??? But surely United could do no wrong with TWO Norwegian goal-scorers??

Emile Mpenza - The Belgian striker came close to completing a move to Rangers last year, but it all fell apart due to money. And that's something that wouldn't concern United, who have previosly been linked with Mpenza, and spent £19 on van Nistelrooy alone!! The Belgian striker has shown that he can score goals in Germany and at international level, so I don't really see what'd stop him in the Premiership??

Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink - He's known as one of the deadliest strikers in today's game! He has proven that he can score goals in all sorts of conditions and styles, and even top the league's goal count as his side are relegated!! His spell at Leeds was very successfull for his career, but money took over and off he went. United would surely be able to 'meet his needs', and could even boost his chances of a regular place for Holland, by playing with van Nistelrooy at Old Trafford! If he wants to win things, he'll have to leave Chelsea! Who aren't exactly helping his chances, before he gets too old. He'll have to make his move soon, or else he could end up with nothing extra!

So as you can see, there are many possibillities as to who should replace Andy Cole. The question is just who??, and how much??? But whoever it is, i'm sure Fergie (or the next manager) will make the right descision! Otherwise they wouldn't be incharge of such a 'high-profile' club!
Who do you think should replace Cole??
Any other suggestions?? - I bet ScottGiles comes up with 'Hakan Sukur'!

Yeah, I saw D'alessandro play for Argentina in the U21 match with England a while back! He was brilliant!! But he looked like more of an attacking midfielder/playmaker rather than a possible 'no.9' striker. I still say Hasselbaink!

i knew fergie read these forums. sunday people yesterday - man united showing interest in £16 million rated exciting young prospect Andres D'Allesandro. that'd be an excellent signing. he's very nippy and could quite easily leave any defence in his wake. he's a great young player i'd like to see at united and the veron factor may just persuade him to sign for united instead of barca (even though they got saviola) and juventus

It's a possibility! But as he's the possibly the only half decent attacking Turkish international, there could be high demand for him. And you never know, a club like Barceklona could come in for him and offer him money he can't refuse! But yes, he's still one that should be added to Fergie's/next manager's short list!

Hey Solskjaer 24 i thought you might mention me and that thing with Hakan Sukur somehow. I think he is a great player, he filled in for Ronaldo last season when he was injured and he was brilliant.

Now Ronaldo is back and Sukur is getting left out, maybe a move for him?

Man Utd could do with our own, Mr Jari Litmanen. He would compliment the Van man perfectly, AND supply hundreds of goals( hundreds of goals was an exagerration)

Forsell is getting better each season, and he's a great finnisher. Do you remember his Chelsea debut, with those 2 long-range stunners against Palace??? BRILLIANT!!

But I still think Hasselbaink would be a top signing for us, even if he's not they type we usually buy. But a new manager should be coming in, and Hasselbaink may want to leave at the end of the season. So you never know! We could see the big Dutchman at Old Trafford next season! And with his free-kicks, he's defintiley keep Beckham on his toes, who will also stay at the club!

Yeah but the problem with Hasselbaink is that he's not exactly the team player that United tend to buy is he? I agree he is an amazing player, and part of me would love to see him at Old Trafford, but I can't see him fitting in.

As for Jansen, I think he could play in Europe, he's playing well for Blackburn, and he's at an age where I don't think he would be fazed by it.
