No, it's not my money, which is what makes it all the more brilliant. My school has decided to take a flying leap into the 21st century and purchase a DVD player and film library. On top of that I get a large say in which films to buy, and they've touted about a figure of one grand as a budget for the film side of the venture.

Basically in the next few weeks I'm supposed to be drawing up a list of ESSENTIAL films to buy. I would appreciate the opinions of the wise men (and women) who populate this forum as to which films are must buys.

From a personal view I'm aiming to introduce the people in the sixth form to some decent films and I don't plan to set aside a huge portion of the sum for dumb action movies. The only rules are:
1. It must be avaliable to buy on DVD
2. It should have some value as a cintematic work

So, while the Matrix would be included, Rush Hour might not. I'm going to push for the entire Coen brothers back catalogue but apart from that I'm open to suggestions..

Now it's over to you.

A.i sucks Ross. Just accept it. I prefered Pearl Harbour, and I haven't seen that.

The Stanley Kubrick box set would do very well for a starter, as would Oliver Stone's.

To expand that list, I would have to say that you would go for some classics:
Metropolis
39 Steps
Psycho
The 3rd Man
War of the Worlds
Cassablanca
Wizard Of Oz (advances in Technicolor and effects, plus the plot is open for deconstruction)

Modern masterpieces:
Appocalypse Now
Saving Private Ryan
The Matrix
American Beauty
Toy Story

TV:
The Prisoner - a great one to look at plot devices and having an ongoing story where the hero doesn't win in the end of each episode.

Just a few, anyway!

AMERICAN HISTORY X!!

And why not get Eraserhead as well. If it's out on DVD that is. At least that can be watched as a film that isn't meant to be understood. :-D

And I have decided that I shall go see Mulholland Drive if it appears in cinemas round here, but that is unlikely. Didn't think it would be a 15.

And you couldn't resist could you Gaz? Mocking me for liking A.I?! I know, why not buy The Mummy Returns because that's 'really good'. Oh and how could I forget the utter crap that is Star Wars Episode 1?

:-D

The Spagetti Western Box Set thing. With Fistful of Dollars, Few Dollars More, Good Bad Ugly in. You must must must must get that.

Why? Because they all just rule.

Casablanca, Raging Bull, Wonderful Life, Platoon... I'll think of some more later.
