"Almost 1.5m copies of the smash hit Grand Theft Auto: Vice City were sold
in the US in December, bringing its total to 4.4 million since its launch in October. Overall sales of video games in the States rose by 7% in December, say analysts, with software sales for the year rising by 21%. The figures mean Americans spent a record $10.3 billion on video games in 2002.
Of the top 20 best-selling games, 13 were for the PlayStation 2, with five for GameBoy Advance and one each for the GameCube and the Xbox.
Microsoft celebrates coming second:
A combination of price cuts and aggressive marketing has pushed Microsoft's box game console into a commanding second place. Sales statistics gathered by market analysts Chart-Track and GfK show that the console was the number two, out of three, for European gamers in 2002. The sales figures reveal that Microsoft sold more than a million of the consoles in France, Germany and the UK. Part of the success was due to a pre-Christmas offer that bundled top selling games in with the console and boosted sales during the key festive season.
By comparison during the four months up to Christmas Microsoft's arch-rival Sony sold more than 10 million Playstation 2s across the world."
