I was simply saying that customs knows what kind of thing is in each parcel. I never said that customs opens every parcel, just that they can. The original point of this post was someone wanted to know about importing DVDs. I also never implied that customs knows every film that is banned, just that their is a penalty for importing these if you are caught. I've never tried, or een had the urge, to try and import any film that is banned over here, and unless you have then neither of us can say what the chances of being caught are !

I doubt they pay much

The cigarettes would count as a gift, and all parcels from abroad have a label on them saying what they contain, so unless your girlfriend gets a parcel the size of several suitcases then customs have no reason to search it. DVDs, videos etc are all marked as such, and have to be marked if they are not rated for this country with a BBFC rating. naturally these parcels attract more attention. Customs is quite entitled to open these, and with the drive to cut down piracy are quite likely to, as long as they reseal the items. Most recently I ordered the original American buffy season 1 boxset from an American internet site and that was opened by customs but resealed as obviously Buffy isnt the kind of thing not allowed into the country ! Check the Uk customs site for more info... naturally if you're caught buying stuff which is illegal then you have a bit more to worry about than not receiving your video lol

Fair enough, I;ve bought a couple of things from them and never noticed it. Good thing is the currency conversion rates are so good you get stuff really, really cheap.

Make sure you look at the internation prices though, they'll give you the price without the Aus tax, but with shipping.

Some of them are, the ones i've looked at say Region 2 + 4.

My girlfriend gets fags sent over in the post from her family in France and the parcels have never once been opened by customs.

I doubt they pay much attention to dvds.

"Without sounding like too much of a killjoy... if a film is banned in the UK then Customs will just seize it when its shipped to you, and many sites know which titles are banned in which countries and won't sell them anyway."

Total rubbish. Firstly, do you think Customs open every package? Secondly, do you think every Customs Officer knows every film that's been banned? Thirdly, while it's illegal to sell DVDs without a BBFC rating, everything else is a huge grey area. A R1 DVD with a different cut is just as "banned" as any video nasty.

As they are unlikely to impact on Special Reserves sales, www.ezydvd.com.au

The titles are all Region 4, I don't knwo where you got the impression that they were "multi-region". They are, however, all PAL.

Without sounding like too much of a killjoy... if a film is banned in the UK then Customs will just seize it when its shipped to you, and many sites know which titles are banned in which countries and won't sell them anyway. A good site for Import, though I think they're all region 1, is Play 24/7 at play.com (needs www in front of it, obviously :) ) They have free shipping and are pretty cheap cause theyre on one of the channel islands where "tax" is a foreign word :)

Most Aussie DVD's are multi Region so they're Region 2 as well. Over in Oz they sell a lot of films that aren't available or are banned in the UK.
