The ‘Sim’ genre of games are becoming ever more popular and we have seen many a Sim game including the likes of Sim City, The Sims, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Theme park, Beach life, etc. The list does, quite literally, go on and on. You may think that these games cover every aspect of existence, from holidays to everyday life, from houses to theme parks. What is next? I propose a brand new development that I will name ‘Sim Planet’.
As the gamer you would be in the driving seat from step 1. You can choose the scientific ‘big bang’ creation of the universe (A template universe for beginners) or you could take the religious route and build every little thing (See bible). The next step would be to choose the kind or organisms that would develop on your planet. You can select from dinosaurs, humans, amphibians, mammals or your own custom created creatures. You then need to add and edit terrain on the planet (e.g. Forests, deserts, oceans and grassy plains). You would also be responsible for adding vegetation for your primitive creatures to munch on, or sketching out a food chain and watch them eat each other.
As in all Sim games, your creatures will develop and colonies and civilisations will spring up and built settlements. However you are the creator and it is up to you to choose if you like a group or don’t. You can use your infinite powers (namely a mouse and keyboard) to send meteors, plague, famine and drought to kill your creatures and make particular species extinct. But you don’t have to just do bad things; you can be fair and just and give food, warmth and safety to creatures that please you.
Like in the real world, you will get followers and worshippers and you can choose to reward these people by giving them mercy or can kill them all if they irritate you. It is also up to you how they worship you, building they erect in your honour and ceremonies they must participate in. You will have the option to send a prophet to preach about you and spread the word about your divinity, or you can sit back and watch the civilisations batter each other with rocks.
Just like all civilisations, your world will grow greedy and fight for food, power and control. You can remain a neutral in these wars and wait it out, or you can choose a certain side to fight with and crush the opposing side with fire, lightning, storms and many other cool things! If your side wins then you will be praised by all species and get a little warm feeling inside. But if your side loses, nobody will believe in your power and you will have limited control over any affairs on the planet.
Counties will advance, some rich and some poor, technology will become greater and you can control major developments and breakthroughs like man going into space or electricity been generated. You can help advancements by giving signs and hints to your followers, or you can choose to hinder them by causing earthquakes and volcanoes to erupt. The technology advances as you see fit and good and bad races will emerge. Famous figures will try to do good or bad such as Hitler and Bin Laden, who you can choose to kill or sit back and watch your people try their best against them.
But the game cannot just stop when it reaches the modern day, it will continue into the future. You will have to prepare your planet against alien invasions, and fights wars against other planets that wish to seize power of the universe. Your people will be inquisitive, naturally, and they will explore the realms of time and space (and probably crash the game going too far!).
You will lead your planet far into the future and who knows what will happen and what will be discovered. How we are going to make a game that sees into the future is far beyond my imagination but I am sure in time it can be done, right Mr Gates?
