"Tempest 3000"

While flicking through the latest NGC (after buying it when told to by Dringo), I came across an advert for Edge. On it, there was a large picture of some kind of mule on a psychedelic background. Printed on the bottom, were the words:

"Jeff Minter is back with a Tempest 3000 follow-up. It's only on GameCube. And it's only in Edge."

Now I know some of you lot like Jeff Minter for his work on a game called Llammatron (or something like that?) but this advert took me by surprise. I don't really know who Jeff Minter is, what this Tempest 3000 thing is and why it's only on GameCube.

Anyone have any details?

Don't like Edge. I have the 'Three Kings' issue and found it really quite boring. I much prefer the excellent GamesTM that you should all go and buy.

Good job you got NGC. Edge's favourite machine is in fact Gamecube... did you know that? Although they don't pretend it is ruleing sales wise.

I think it's only in the earliest stages of development and probably won't be released until 2004, or late this year. There's a big article in Edge about it that will whet your appetite.

I might have to get this game then. Have no other details been announced? I'll check out the website.

From what I've heard Unity is like Rez only in that it is an 'abstract' shoot-em-up. And I think it's going to be Gamecube only because Minter tends to write stuff using very low-level programming languages: Tempest 3000 was, I think, written in assembly and/or machine language which is processor dependent and therefore non-portable. If you have a look at llamasoft.co.uk then you can take a look at Minter's announcement and the forums (which he posts in himself). And while you are there you can grab a copy of Gridrunner ++, which isn't very graphically sophisticated but is a great example of the kind of 'in the zone' shooter that Minter makes.

Yes. Unity is like Rez. Apparently. There were some shots around. I think on the Upwire.

Llamatron was an utterly fantasticaly incredibly colourful game, that had lasers and llamas and things flying everywhere. Or something like that....
