Ahhh, today's entertainment. No longer do we stay up all night chopping people's heads off, or playing scrabble, or just sitting aimlessly, watching a spider as it creates its web with amazing balance and skill...
Anyway, I'd like to talk about the current entertainment industry. This includes Movies at the cinema, DVDs, music, Television and Books. As always, I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to type about, but it'll come to my head as it goes along.
Firstly, Lord Of The Rings. I saw it in Friday night at an absolutely packed UCI, where they had a punk rock band playing (the music hurt my Grandmother's ears, who had come for the first time in a while because she loved the books so much.) Once we were finally in our seats, I realised I was in for a big treat. LOTR is a fest of action, drama, emotion and magic. The environments are amazing, as are the characters and visual effects. It is not likely you will see anything better at the cinema this year (although me thinks Episode 2 will want to challenge that) and I highly, tally, biggly, longly and any other word meaning that I recommend it very, very much. Got the book today, and although it’s a rather huge book, I’m sure it will be as intriguing as the film.
I’m hopefully going to see Black Hawk Down on Saturday with a few mates (I’m only 14, but hopefully my muscular posture will get me in.) From the previews I’ve seen it looks impressive, and I know it’s a true story, but I’ve heard it’s been blown completely out of proportion. Anyone know if this is true, or the stuff that smells and comes from cow’s behinds, as well as most other mammals.
Onto TV. Is it just me, or have all the good comedies either gone stale, or finished forever? The new series of Frasier has been disappointing so far in my opinion, and I think the main reason was that the Daphne-Niles relationship was everyone’s favourite storyline. Now that’s sorted out, they haven’t got much else to write for either of them. Red Dwarf is finished, and I have no idea what’s happened to the supposed movie. The Fast Show has gone forever, leaving behind it a legacy of probably being the best sketch show ever created. Father Ted’s 3 series’ (I think) of success are now marred by the death of Dermot Morgan, but we still have all those wonderfully hilarious episodes. However, I’ve seen them all now, and it’s just not the same watching them for the fourth time. Men Behaving Badly repeats on UKGold are getting tiresome, and Friends is surely getting closer to the end of it’s fruitful life.
Puts on deep, booming voice BUT!! There is hope. Okay, only a tiny glimmer of it, but it’s hope. Smack The Pony has just returned or a new series, and it’s as funny as ever. Hopefully, the lack of top class comedy will spur on some writers out there, and I do think that in a couple of years time there will be much more great British comedy, and maybe some American stuff too, than we have the moment. And please God tell me that Gimme Gimme Gimme, the piece of putrid, rotting vomit that it is, is coming to an end!
The music industry has been getting me down lately. If I hear my friends talk about ‘So Solid Crew’ one more time, I’ll…well, it won’t be nice. Why does everyone in my school like garage music?? Some idiot called MC Twonk talking along with DJ Arsewipe’s remix of a ‘song’ that was probably utter rubbish anyway. “I’ve got 21 seconds to go.” Thank God, then you can go away and take your crappy ‘music’ with you. “Why do you hate us? All we did was bring garage from the underground.” WHY DO THINK WE HATE YOU!?!? YOU JUST SAID IT YOURSELF!!!
Books? Well, books rule, obviously. I’m looking forward to getting my metaphorical teeth into Lord Of The Rings, and have just finished a couple of excellent reads, namely “TimeLine” by Micheal Crichton and “Others” by the King of descriptive writing, James Herbert. And you know what lots of other 14-year-olds say when the word ‘books’ is mentioned?? Here’s an example, taken from today’s English lesson:
“Reading?? A book?? I haven’t read a book since I was…11?”
Well, perhaps that’s why your hair makes you look like a freak, your personality is rather dry and your sense of humour the same as on average 5-year-olds.
Well, that’s just about it for today really. I have not much else to say apart from I’m a bit nervous about an indoor cricket match I’ve been invited to play in for my team. I wish I didn’t lack so much self-confidence. But then again, I wish my ears wouldn’t make me look like a human version of the FA Cup, so I guess we can’t have everything.
