Has anybody experienced any problems downloading updates from Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)?
I have been unable to download anything for days? I have tried on 2 PC's using windows 98/SE, ME and XP. on one PC i tried a clean install!

I know it's not the most impotant thing in the world but we all know how buggy microsoft software is, so the update helps.

PS I can ACCESS the site but the download/instalation fails, every time.

Updating to a new operating system usually means deleting the old one. The reason for the problems is that you can't delete a program that is itself, if you know what I mean.

I mean, like, suppoe your half way through deleting Windows, then it comes to the bit where it has to delete the deleter. It can't do it, because the deleter has deleted some of itself and therefore doesn't have those things left on the disk in order to delete the rest.

See?

Of course the patches are needed. Thats why the updates are released. On the Update page M$ mark them essential/recommended/add-ons etc. Of course Windows will still run without them, but we all know that Windows is renound for security holes, memory leaks etc, so it's common sense and in your best interest to keep your machine up-to-date.

Re-installing Windows seems a bit drastic. I've been managing to install them ok.

You got active X on your PC??
If not then you need it.
If you have then maybe you are missing required system files if the download isn't completing.

You might have to re-instal windows, are the updates really required??

Do you care? I keep my Windows as far away from any sort of "update" as possible.

The servers are probably down. Leave it for a couple of days.
