For me, the ps2 was too old, with too few big titles in the pipeworks for it to sit beside my tv (no offence sony lovers, just my opinion). As for the x-box... it was, well, the x-box.
Microsoft have always stated that their prime marketing strategy was word of mouth, to win over the hardcore gamers, and let the positive feeling filter through to the mass market.
Lets be honest, it didn't really work. As the US launch showed, sales were impressive, but greatly outstripped by the gamecube, and the general feeling in the UK seems much less receptive to the machine than stateside.
The forum members here are a pretty good example of some of the uk's gaming hardcore, and it's clear that most of us are either on sony's bandwagon or waiting for the 'cube. Oh yeah, and we all want to see bill gates fall flat on his face : )
But what about the console? Unlike the (slightly ageing) ps2, it's new, and harnesses state of the art technology. Unlike the cube (since panasonic's q-cube looks so unlikely to see euopean stores), it doubles as a dvd player.
Specs aside (thank me later ; ) )the power shown by the machine matches its rivals, and while getting a piece of the big multiplatform launches (Tony Hawk's, SSX, FIFA, for example), the x-box, like ps2 and gamecube, boasts its own great looking exclusive titles (Halo, Amped, Project Gotham Racing) worthy of drawing in an audience.
So why not? Why pass the x-box without a second glance? Because you don't like bill gates, microsoft, or what they stand for? Because you love cutting off your nose to spite your face?
Me? Eventually i considered it. Seriously. Personally, i don't need another dvd player, and prefer nintendo's launch titles. And price. But at least i considered it. Fairly. Didi you?
I've sort of considered it, but because of the price, the lack of Nintendo games and the lack of Rare I decided that it's not for me.
I'd find little to compensate for that with an Xbox, so it's not for me.
On a side note, Perfect Dark has never been given a confirmed date anyway, but I wouldn't have expected it in a hurry, because Rare aren't a company that particularly like to do sequels without really improving on what they originally had.
We could have seen a really good looking Perfect Dark at launch, but other than graphics it would offer nothing that the original didn't, so we must wait.
As for X-box...It looks better and better everytime i see it. Solid racing game (PGR) solid FPS (Halo) solid beat em up (DOA3). X-box version of Max payne also supposed to be better than PS2 version. X-box version of the Matrix version will be better than PS2/Gamecube version down to Microsoft paying large amounts of money to the developer.
The launch games on the X-Box appeal to me more than the GC. I have pre-ordered my X-Box which will go nicely next to my PS2. I will also have a tiny space left for the GC, but wont get that until the summer. GC will have some great game aswell.
>Didi you?
Who is Didi?
Anyway, nice post, and I think I kinda considered Xbox, but I can't afford one so its kind of decided for me. As far as games go, Halo looks good, but I think it'll be out on PC...
