But yes, everything else was to lead you astray. If I had just said 'thermos' then it would be a bit more obvious

Correct answer!
I didn't want to give many clues away as it's fun to work things out.
The men worked together to kill the victim, that's why none of them have any info. One tipped the thermos contents onto the coals while the magazine and iPod were offered to the victim to distract his attention. The men made a hasty exit, then entered at a safer time to retrieve the iPod and magazine.
That fits I think, but it's not very concise.
