1995-Japan.

Mario and Zelda two of the biggest names in the gaming industry were joined by a third, a certain electric yellow mouse name Pikachu. Welcome ladies and gentleman to the start of a craze, a craze that made the Gameboy smash sales records and saved the life of the depleting N64. Pokémon Red and Blue (or Red and Green as it is known in Japan) were two of the biggest selling games of all time, the Wizards of the coasts card game started a world wide phenomena with millions of school children, buying, playing and swapping Pokémon cards. A sequel was released 4 years later and Pokémon Gold and Silver beat the record previously set by Yellow. Nintendo released a collection of N64 spin off titles, a game based on the card game was released on the Gameboy colour, A highly original pinball game was released as was puzzle games.

The game revolutionized the Gameboy and its popularity, new standards were set and people spent hours trading and battling their mates as Link up play on the Gameboy became more popular. Pokémon Crystal a game based on Gold and Silver took the Link up idea to a whole new level by using the Internet via a mobile phone link.

7 Years later:

Harry Potter rules the world in today’s day and age and people are forgetting their small Pocket monsters (Don’t laugh). Despite this Pokémon is still a hot license and still stands besides Zelda and Mario as being the biggest games of all time. The games themselves still sell like hot cakes as people are well aware of the games brilliance so despite the falling ratings of the TV show and the lack of money being spent on the little cards the games, Nintendo’s department, are still well received. But is Pokémon the same?

I will have to put my hands up and admit I am a Poke-nut the games are superb and although I was never a major fan of the cards the games are still on my to get list each time a new one is announced. In the last 3 months I have bought both Pokémon crystal and Pokémon Stadium Gold and Silver both of which I have barley touched. You see Red and Blue and also Gold and Silver had an amazing compulsion to play, my main friends had them and my desire to train my squad to pound my mates and collect them all before my friends did was brilliant. Trading, Battling and Training they all had my friends in mind my squad wasn’t complete until it had beaten all my friends.

So Pokémon was essentially a multiplayer game like Phantasy Star Online and so with the loss of the craze what has happened? Gaming numbers have decreased; fewer people let it know they still play the game and compulsion to beat friends have left the casual gamers. Pokémon was brilliant but will it ever be the same without hundreds of people queuing up to get their mews or battle in the tournaments? No I don’t think so, once upon a time I was the best but my entire squad was destroyed and so with Gold and Silver I began to re-claim my empire but as peoples interest began to fade so did my desire to re-claim my empire and Pokčmon’s long lifespan has significantly shrunk to the length of the game.

So without the craze Pokémon is nothing more than a brilliant RPG, meanwhile Nintendo are not about to give up on the Pokémon Empire. Pokémon World the GBA title intends to use an interesting device called an E-card reader, which involves the use of Pokémon cards. Could the E-card reader put a spark back in to the Pokémon trading card game’s popularity. It isn’t impossible the ideas of buying small and cheap add ons to improve your game maybe an attractive idea to the public and may hit off. Pokémon Mini is something else used by Nintendo but this is in fact a small Tamagotchi style machine that plays 4 different purchasable games only avalible from certain outlets. So will Pokémon return to its dizzying heights? I doubt it but lets hope the Gamecube title and the GBA title will be something special that will prove that Pikachu is still as strong as Mario and Link.

Here’s to the future.

Anyway, franchisewise, Pokemon wil now go down the same path as Mario and Sonic.
It was big, but the craze is over and the franchise is wearing away.
To normal people, it'll be the big craze of Christmas 1999.
The Nintendo gamers, it'll be the name of a neat series of RPG's, the same way Zelda is a classic series of adventures, and Mario and Donkey Kong are platformers.

Nintendo will need a new franchise to set the world alight again.

Personally, I think they need to keep on the look out for fresh imaginative talent. Shigsy might be a god when it comes to making games, but he certainly doesn't possess imortality and what will Nintendo do when he eventually leaves.

He needs an apprentice, a heir, a Miyamoto Jnr...

Kameo owes plenty to Pokemon so I doubt that'll be a reason.
Pokemon has been about giving your pet commands so I think that you will select your commands in a Final Fantasy type of way but it would be interesting to see how the AI deals with the fights and makes them look impressive.

Perhaps you'd get to control your pets in mini games.

Hmmm but is this not stepping on Kameo's toes?

Using certain monsters to climb walls etc....

Yep, like those ones, only more too. Use Pikachu to send electric waves down a cable to switch power on to a building. Use one of the fighting Pokémon to kick down a door. It would add a lot more to the games.

No, not yet.

Yep, enjoyed it.

I think that the future of the Pokémon license lies in the evolution of the concept of 'catching 'em all'.

On the Gameboy all you had to do was beat them up a bit, then throw a Pokéball at them, and they'd be yours. On the GBA and Gamecube I'd like to see you collecting objects that you could use to set traps for Pokémon.

For instance, dig a big hole, cover it up, and wait for a Pokémon to stumble into it. Or have a Pokémon using it's powers against you to stop you getting close enough to catch it, so you have to find an object to protect yourself, so you can get close enough to launch your own Pokémon to fight against it.

Also, you should be able to use the powers of your Pokémon when not in battle.

If they explore these avenues then the titles could be really excellent adventures.

I can't see the evolution of the title taking it down a route that involves real-time battles with your Pokémon, as surely this would be stepping on Rare's Kameo toes?
