The "General Games Chat" forum, which includes Retro Game Reviews, has been archived and is now read-only. You cannot post here or create a new thread or review on this forum.
But instead of campaigning for Notable status, I suggest that quite a lot of people here should take a look at how they post and treat others.
This place, the FOG Chat Forum, has turned into a morass of utterly pointless, vacuous shrieking and retarded “flame-wars” over nothing. Whilst in other forums, discussions continue for weeks using long words, big sentences and punctuation.
I have noticed, of late, a trend of “newbie bashing”. Somebody arrives and posts something. Then a load of salivating, shiny-eyed eager-beavers proceed to try and demolish that person before they’ve settled in and found their footing.
Why?
What is it with a new face that makes so many of you turn into villagers-with-torches? Are you that timid and quiet in real-life that you feel the need to pick on the new kid? Does it give you a sense of self-worth and place in the world because you slammed somebody for spelling mistakes?
What you seem to forget is that sure, a lot of people begin posting because of GAD. They see the advert and think “Free games? I’ll have a crack at that” and do exactly what a lot of you do.
But because they’re new, or they spell something wrong, they are fallen upon with lupine glee and torn to shreds.
*slowly applauds*
Way to make people feel welcome.
But what really galls me is when somebody posts a damn good topic and is met with “I couldn’t be arsed reading that” or “boring” or “seen it before”.
Do you feel threatened that a *gasp* NEWBIE might take your GAD?
Well guess what kids, if a person writes better than you do? You deserve to lose. I’ve seen crying after crying about “Why didn’t I win? Waaah waaah waaah”.
Why didn’t you win? Because someone else posted something better than you that day.
The problem is, and it’s not really a problem, is that with more and more joining SR Chat, the ratio of sausage-fingered joeys will increase. And as with any mob, it degenerates into mindless violence and chanting. So we have anybody new that posts shouted down by drooling ninnies desperate to prove…what?...their worth to a bunch of other names on a screen?
It doesn’t make sense to me at all.
Plastic-coated is a good example. He posts an informative, humorous topic and is met with the sort of response usually reserved for dogs watching television.
Are well-written posts that much of a chore to read? Just because something is long doesn’t mean it’s not worth reading. I’d rather spend 5 mins reading something that has had some thought put into it than yet another “I played GTA3 and it didn’t suk” “Yea it does” “shut up” “no you shut up” thread.
The standard of the FOG has plummeted to levels that would make Darwin weep and tear up his notes.
And somebody wrote that it’s a Notable’s “job” to bring goodness?
Balls.
You should be doing it yourself. Instead of falling upon a newbie like a deranged bonobo, try and actually bother to explain the general protocol before screaming hysterically and soiling your nappies.
Jesus, even the staff think a hell of a lot of you are uber-goobers.
Try posting something interesting yourself before you criticise others. Topics like “My dad is a f****t” would get you punched in the face if you spoke like that to a grown-up. And nobody cares if you heard a “wikked joke”.
Just as nobody is interested in your mate’s website that has all the appearance of being constructed by Audrey Hepburn using photoshop whilst on a rollercoaster.
Grow up, empty some of that fluid in your skull and work harder on your own posts before you start slamming other peoples.
Especially when they’re better than 90% of the effluent that passes for chat here.
And this forum isn't like that. It's hostile and pathetic. I tried for almost a year and a lot to try and change it, but it's fighting something that could never be changed. And well, if they're all jammed in here, at least they're not messing up the other forums.
Basically, I completely agree with you. But it's pointless saying, they won't bloody listen/read, heh.
> I thought my online gaming topic was pretty darned good.
So did ...
Care to elaborate as to why I should have?
I got into heated feuds with Stryke and then Lord H, because I didn't like the way they constantly belittled people, especially newbies. Insecure morons, that's all they were, and the easiest targets are "newbies", as they're not well liked or popular people, who have a load of friends to defend them. It's sad.
I agree it would be better without the spammy "look at me im great" posts but its what makes the world go around.
How many of you have read this topic and immedidatly said this doesn't apply to me. Well take a good look at all the topics you have posted and all the replys you have made top other peoples topics, before you hold yourselves above the rest of us.
I did used to wonder why all of my topics didn't win; I've written so many over the course of abut a year and only one has won, but I've come to terms with the fact that I just can't write topics. I not really bothered, I can still write pretty decent reviews.
Good post, Goatboy, best thing I've read in a long time. Nice to see something that really makes sense instead of things about how games don't work or merging games with members to make posts (guilty :-D).
