Not when parsing from one to another... it saves having to re tag everything... It's kind of like reverse XML?

Its a descriptive tag. It doesn't do anything visually but alot discriptively. If you parse your code from HTML to xHTML to WML to whatever, it retains the information between this tag keeping it's context.

A descriptve Tag... Defined in HTML 4 because of it's tight integration to xHTML and XML allowing you to parse the information backwards and forwards while retaining it's context...
Ta Da... Unfortunately HTML 4 is only relevant if you adhere it strictly, which included adding a strict HTML4DTD.
So yes.. is in the HTML4 spec, but useless if your site doesen't adhere to it correctly.
But it must be partly official as why would it work in IE ???(dunno about NS)
