Is it something about PC games and PC components that causes this. Every console game has a box that just fits the game inside it. This is good. However, no sooner than do PC manufacturers realises that the boxes for their games are too big, and they should start packaging them in DVD-size cases, than the boxes for components are bigger. Three years ago, my Voodoo 3 box was about 150% of the card's length. Now, however, my Hercules 4500 box is at least twice the length of the card. This is not justifiable. Geforce 3 boxes are huge. The same applies to sounds cards.

It cant be the packaging that protects the card, since this is just cheap plastic. It could be half the size of the current size and still be suitable. Why is this waste neccessary? Contrary to popular belief, size DOES NOT MATTER. Can't these people get it through their thick skulls?

No man, it would have increased 250%. ;-)

They dont man... most PC games I buy therse days tend to come in DVD style case...

In fact there was a concerted effort in companies to package games in this style (Thers a discussion I had with a guy in Reto Games forum about how he misses the larger boxes)

Things are still changing, but they are on their way... The probalem with PC games is that for every game with a manual that can slip into a DVD case package, theres a 400 page manual which comes in at twice the size of the case itself...

This is why the generic size PC game box came into use (early 90's I think, at least I remeber buying Amiga games in boxes that size?) ... Since its easier and cheaper for the distributor to order a single size to fit all needs...

As with computer hardware comming in big boxes... well... that happens :) ... If you buy a lot of toys, or DVD players, they will come in large boxes... If Ive just spend a couple of hundred quid on a piece of hardware, especially since its something that I'll hopefully never seen again until I'm taking it out to replace in 5+years time, I want to feel like Ive actualy bought something...

However, at the end of the day, either way, it doesnt really matter, and certainly isnt worth getting stressed about... Just remember to recycle ;)

No you don't. You should be happy with the expensive hardware inside of the unenvironmentally-friendly cardboard box.

No it's not. If I have £100 of shares, and the next day I have £250 of shares, then my shares have gone up 150%. Simple.

Anyway...

My Voodoo 5 5500 is HUGE. I mean, the actual card is MASSIVE. It's easily the biggest thing in there, and it barely fits in anyway. What's more, it's so big, it needs its own powersupply from the PSU. Unfortuantely, this now leaves me CD-ROM-less (HDA + HDC + HDD + Voodoo 5 makes 4 components, and I only have 4 plugs). Must get a Y-splitter...

It's just for display purposes really. If they were all in small boxes, you wouldnt notice it, the larger the box, the more eye catching it is. When games were in massive boxes, the bigger they were, the more you thought you was getting for your money. I know people who bought a game with a large box, just because they though the game would be better cos the box was bigger and heavier, but its mostly to do with people seeing it on the shelf, so it stands out.

I really liked the GameCube packaging for Japan; Small cases which neatly fitted the game and a memory card, plus a nifty holder for the manual. All covered in a cardboard sleeve. What do the Americans do? They go and slop it in an ugly, badly-designed DVD case. I really hope that we get the boxes like Japan here in Europe.

Big is better.

Makes it look as though you are getting your money's worth when looking at the huge box...of course...usually dissapointed when box is opened.

I got a huge box for my new 5.1 speakers. Speakers are tiny though...
