First of all, Ninty have NOT said the console will release on March 14th. ONE Ninty insider has said this is the case, and this is what's caused the stir. Of course, there is some compelling evidence- several retailers have agreed with the mid March release, and gone public with this.
However, where do you think the retailers got this info? Not one of them has said that Ninty have told them about the mid-March release.... Ninty hasn't gone public with anything. In fact, these retailers have most likely just heard these (very strong) rumours, and agreed with them.
There is also the fact that Nintendo have said themselves that the GC will be released in April/May- contrary to Ninty predictions. Now, I know what you're going to say- Ninty brought the N64 FORWARDS in Japan, so they may do the same here...
But what happened with the N64 in Europe? It was put back... 3 times in fact! For several months...
Which brings me to another point...
Many publishers and retailers think the same may happen with GC... just as many have said the GC will come out in September as have said March. Some inside Ninty sources have even said Septmeber is the launch date. However, Nintendo fan web sites don't say anything of this because, understandably, their pro ninty.
Now, I don't for one minute think the September thing is true- after all, it would lose Ninty their European market. HOWEVER, the move is in step with Ninty moves of the past (N64, DD, many games being delayed), and is just as credible as the March release- there are retailers, publishers and Ninty insiders (apparantly) who are saying Marh/September.
So, to sum up...
The evidence about the September/March releases is both just as credible... HOWEVER:
September would be stupid to launch- Ninty will have lost it's market
March is too soon. Most retailer have said they don't know when the console is coming out, and so to tell them "you have under 2 months to prepare for launch" is disasterous.
In my opinion, it is the OFFICIAL word that is the most likely- April/May. Not only does this allow Ninty enough time to get consoles made for the launch, but it also means that retailers can prepare, and advertise the launch. Also, it's not so late that the console will lose the market.
Those are just my thoughts, but it's important to keep things in perspective. Especially that all the rumours are unofficial... surely Ninty Europe is keen to release launch detials as soon as they find out?

How many times have we seen a game postponed maybe a year after we see it in Japan-And it is from Nintendo Europes decisions!
Nintendo Europe decide and manage everything, the only say NCL have in the management in Europe, is if they can provide enough consoles to the European market. Or set a number to be sold.
> Hmm... interesting. Yeah, I doubt the septemer thing is true, but it'd be good
> if they DID launch in March wouldn't it?
Of course! Not only does it mean they don't lose out to the Xbox, but it simply means gamers get great games sooner!
I'm all for it... however, some people seem to have taken the March release as holy based on a few small rumours that web sites have quoted!

On the contrary, Ninty Europe have said "Spring", however then go on to say they don't have a clue
Ninty Japan have said April/May, and they're the ones who decide
