Before I start this, I know I'm going to get a lot of muppet replies saying "Fanboy" and the like. This is not true. I have no loyalty to any machine or company, I just like playing games.

I bought my PS2 on launch day (preorder), and I still love it. The games on the system are superb and I'll buy a PS3 for definate. I'm happy to admit it's not perfect, there are some really appalling games on the PS2, but I've been selective and now I have a great collection.

Not too long ago I bought a Gamecube. Went down Game to trade in a bunch of old PS2 games and pick up a few more new ones, and they had a Gamecube in the preowned. Ended up paying £30 with 2 games, which I thought was a bit of a bargain.

Anyway, I know my opinion of the cube is limited, as I havent had it all that long and don't have many games, but to be perfectly honest, I'm not all that impressed. Well, I am, but not as much as I was with the PS2..

The Machine....

It's a very cute box indeed. Mine is finished in black. The pads are superb, though I still prefer the PS2's dualshock. It was nice of them to supply a machine to TV lead with a through connection so I could plug my PS2 in as well without buying an adaptor. Diddn't get any kind of bonus/introduction disc, which was a shame.

The games, I have now played all the following enough to have an opinion.

Pikmin - This is a great game and will definately get the sequel
Super Monkeyball - This is also excellent and will also get the sequel

Super Smash Brothers Melee - How on earth did this warrant such a high score and so much praise? You get to play as all these characters? So what! Here is a fast yet not incredibly pretty 2d fighter the likes of which were done better by streetfighter on the snes but with more skill required to win. (I started up my snes to compare this).

Luigi's Mansion - This is ok, it looks quite pretty and the controls are quite nice, but nothing special.

Star wars Rogue leader - I'll admit this is not my thing, but I wouldnt have given it the score that the mags did. If they are still touting this as a pinnacle of graphics then the future looks a bit bleak.

Mario Sunshine - What!?!?!?! Where did the 90+ scores come from for this? It doesn't look that much better than a N64 game, and regardless of what anyone says, I personally enjoyed Ratchet and Clank and even Jak and Daxter a lot more.

Mario Party 4 - Only just got this, but it had better be good in 4 player because it's really weak in 1 player. It looks like a Tomy my first game and is almost a chore to play. Press the green one once, then make a cup of tea. Play a minigame and then put the washing on. I've got better things to do.

The Attitude... (this is where I'll get the real complaints... :) )

Anyone who calls PS2 owners fanboys can now **** off. The Ninty attitude way surpasses any fanboyism that I have ever seen. I bought Cube magazine as it had a book on the front with all their game reviews (seemed like a good place to start) and jesus! They were slagging all the other machines left, right and center, moaning about the games, the pads, the looks and everything else about the PS2, and got some sneaky digs at the x-box in there too. Then they ran a feature on "What have nintendo done for us" which was about 40% guff and 60% slating other machines. They also claimed that there are no rubbish games on the system and then game a review of about 30/100.

So I bought NGC for the DVD. Firstly the dvd had a complete mare in my PS2 (the only dvd player I have right now) so that was a waste. reading the mag diddn't tell me anything at all. some thing about the new gc2 in 2005 with no more real info than the SR news monkey, a bunch of reviews where only 2 games got over about 80 or so and that was it.

The people that swear by nintendo are, for want of a better, less harsh word, deluded. Never before in owning any console have I met so many owners that will refuse point blank that anything could be better than their prized GC, or will slate other machines. It's an amazingly biased world in GC land. A game is new regardless of characters on their machine, but more than one game with the same character on any other platform is a sequel.

Overall

It's not a bad machine, and there are some great exclusives on there, but I'd never get rid of the PS2 for more games for it. Many games are ports from other machines, mostly the PS2, and the conversions aren't all that hot and when a multiformat game is released, I'll still go for the PS2 version. There are some superb games on there though (well, I've found 2), and I'll hang on to the machine for a while longer. Nintendo will have a great machine on their hands when they get some more AAA titles on there, but at the moment it's still a bit launch-like.

--------------------

(Final note to all people who are thinking 'How dare he slate this! I'll click reply and give him what for!". This is my opinion of the machine so far and it is subject to change pending the release of better games, as the current crop (well, what I have) is not on par with the PS2. Before you start going off on one about how much of a fanboy I am, I'll tell you this:

I'm not a fanboy. I play all games on all machines (exepy footy games), have had most consoles in existance and am loyal to noone. If you wanna make yourselves look like sad nintys by mocking this thread saying that I'm just saying the above because I want to do Sony up the bum, then grow up.

Anyone wishing to defend the system by perhaps recommending me some games/mags would be appreciated though, as I would like to love my GC)

Mario sunshine, look like an N64 game? I think you need to start up mario 64 and then make a comparison.

Resident Evil is really starting to annoy me now - I reckon its pretty good apart from the old fashioned control mechanism and the fact that combat is a chore - you fire your gun slllloooooowwwwwly, zombies take round after round before they go down, if they do go down then they'll be back later as the awful crimson heads, which require you to waste more ammo to take out.
