Today I finally get my act together and decide to watch "Mulholland Drive". In any other part of the country that would be it. But no, I live in the Midlands, where people don't have a cultural deficiency, no that implies that they have some concept about what culture is. There is no culture whatsoever.

First port of call is Showcase Cinemas. Isit there through 5 minutes of cheesy music and robot voices until a human comes on the line:

blokey: "Hello, Showcase cinemas, how can I help you?"
Me: "Are you showing Mulholland Drive at the moment?"
B: "Sorry, we're not, you know you're the second person to have asked that today."
M: "Really?"
B: "Yes, but we're not showing it because we don't think it's big enough."
M: "But it's already been called the best film of the year"
B: "Would you like information about "Behind Enemy Lines" instead"
M: *click*
*hangs up in utter disbelief*

Second stop is Odeon Cinemas. Here I have to wait 10 minutes until the music and robots stop their dance of deathly boredom.

B: "Hello this is Philip at Odeon cinemas, how can I help you?"
M: "Are you planning to show Mulholland Drive at all?"
B: "er.. no, but it's on are selected release list.."
M: "What does tht mean?"
B: "It could mean anything.."
M: "Well that's not very helpful is it?"
B: "We are showing "Behind Enemy Lines" at the moment.."
M: *click*
*hangs up in utter disbelief*

Third stop is Warwick Arts Centre (Lousy sound but shows obscure films). Here I don't have to listen to any music or robots.

Woman: "Hello Warwick Arts Centre Booking Enquiries"
M: "Hello are showing Mulholland Drive at the moment?"
W: "No, we showed that at the start of last year."
M: "Last year???"
W: "Yes"
M: "Are you sure you don't mean "Mulholland Falls"?"
W: "Yes"
M: "But the release date is today.."
W: "Oh yes I do mean "Mulholland Falls", we're showing Mulholland Drive on the 25th of January"

Finally I give up. It is obvious that I am going to have to wait until then to even stand a chance of seeing the film. Thank god she didn't try and tell me that "Behind Enemy Lines" was on... Are cinema staff on commission for selling that film or something?!

Yes. Damn Midlands cinemas.. those lousy two-bit operations. Odeon is still showing "the Grinch" and "Cats and Dogs" but no room for "Mulholland Drive"...
