To cut a long story short, this is what has happened before Metroid Prime.
Samus' parents die in a Space Pirate attack. She is adopted by the Chozo, and ancient and very advanced civilisation. She is infused with Chozo blood and given a Power Suit, which she can't take off, to fight.
Space Pirates are experimenting with Metroids, a very dangerous parasite. Samus travels to the Pirate's home planet of Zebes to stop them and defeats their leader, Mother Brain.
That is all. The Prime storyline you will obviously find out as you play it.
