I think the film conveyed that just as well.
I think Hollywood just hated it, there was no resolution to the story, nobody died to "atone for their sins" (a must-do in major cinema released, can't have "bad people" going unpunished).

It was just a study of addiction, as you say. Be it to pills,drugs, another person...just that knowledge that you will do anything, suffer any indignity to get what you need.

Astonishing film, but not for everyone.
And I loved the interview with Selby on the DVD, he's a smart guy.

I'm not sure about that.. The point of Selby's book is that none of the characters can die bcause they still have to face more hell on earth. I know the film/book did not focus exclusively on drug addiction, but addiction in general, even so I thought it was a fairly graphic representation of how destructive addiction can be. Maybe it didn't lecture about drugs, but the images were graphic enough to make that unneccessary.

Heh, it's only mainstream films that the best actor/best actress/best supporting actor/ress go to, unfortunately. Julia Roberts has been in a few films, so they thought she was long overdue for one. It's only fair after all, isn't it? Meh.

I didn't expect Reqiuem to get anything at all, like Hollywood is going to reward a movie with no positive message or lecturing tones about drugs.

hm, that happens a lot with loosely labelled cult movies. Ever seen Withnail and I? I've known people that saw that just because it's a cult movie, without having the slightest idea what it's about.

On a side-note, the question still remains, how in hell did Julia Roberts win best actress at the oscars? Do the judges actually watch any of the videos or does it just go to the person with the most teeth?

No, that was meant really for people that don't know what to expect from this movie and are expecting something that shocks for the sake of it.
