"Half Life - please help!"

I am stuck on a cetain bit in Half Life and cant seem to figure out what I've got to do next. Its the part in the game where there is a big green plant/triffid type thing in the middle of the room with three claws.

One of the scientists said to 'fire it up', whatever that means, and I've climbed down to the bottom of the silo and pushed the switch and have also pushed the switch at the top of the silo (where electric poles extend from the ceiling after the button is pushed), but now what do I do? I have looked for walkthrus, but the only one I found was for the Decay levels. So can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks xx
