Today’s Wall Street Journal is reporting that Microsoft and Electronic Arts are both investigating the possibility of a purchase of part or all of struggling Sega Corp. The report stressed that no formal talks have yet been held and that a deal is not imminent.

Sega’s current plan is to merge with Sammy Corp. by October 1 of this year. The proposed merger with a maker of pinball, pachinko, and other coin-operated arcade games has met with skepticism in the investment community and is reportedly the cause of internal dissention within Sega.

Both Microsoft and Electronic Arts could potentially benefit from a purchase of Sega. Microsoft is always looking to add to its stable of developers to produce exclusive Xbox titles, and a purchase by Electronic Arts would remove a competitor. Both companies are also trying to bolster their presence in Japan.

Spokespeople at Microsoft and Electronic Arts would not comment on an impending deal, and a Sega spokewoman said that the company had not been approached.

Microsoft and Electronic Arts have also reportedly expressed interest in buying Vivendi Universal’s games unit, which was put on the block earlier this year.

Makes sense this doesn't...

SEGA making money... SEGA wanting to beat EA... SEGA's new plans.

Microsoft and EA may want to buy SEGA but does SEGA want to sell?

All part of Microsofts plans. Buy everything, then whatever we the public buy, the money goes to MS. Then they can develope the follow up games which will run only on Microsoft hardware - so you have to buy an XBox.

I bet MS are offering more cash than EA for the Sega buy out.

I think EA won't buy...

Why should they spend the money when there's enough coming in through their ridiculous monoploy of sports licences ?

Likewise.

As long as they don't enforce their 'developers' on them.

If one of these companies were to buy Sega - I would prefer it to be EA - atleast they would still be able to develop for all the systems...
