Aronofsky will bring something very interesting to the Batman series. Firstly this will be a film where he has a big budget behind him, which should allow Aronofsky to do even more interesting things than he's already done. Expect a decent Warp Records-inspired soundtrack as well. Internet rumours suggest that Christian "American Psycho" Bale is up for the lead role but other details remain sketchy at best.
Put this one in the box marked "interesting". If anyone is capable of producing a blockbuster that isn't empty of ideas then it's Aronofsky.
Hopefully he'll avoid the fate of Bryan Singer who made a good film in X-men, but disappointed on two fronts. It wasn't enough of an action movie to please the "woo-hoo violence yeah!" crowd and it wasn't enough like his first film, "The Usual Suspects" to please his fanbase. However, it did step away from the typical action movie mould, ie a no-brainer with lots of carefully choreographed set pieces of action linked together. X-men actually had characterisation in it, which bodes well for the sequel where Singer won't need to spend nearly as long setting the scene, and character. Aronofsky should strike a better balance. He is a competent, clear-minded director who may even produce a challenging blockbuster and that really would be a remarkable feat. The only examples I can think of in recent times are "American Beauty" and "LA Confidential". If he pulls it off then Oscars success and stardom beckons. If he doesn't, then what the hey, he'll go back to making cult classics like "Pi".
I would have hoped they would have carried on from Returns... that's where I felt it was great until. Forever wasn't too bad, but And Robin was unbearable.
